The prosecution is (I believe) free to appeal that as being too lenient if appropriate.

Appreciate he didn't act on his paedo desires but a million images ffs.

Police found inside his bed a doll, dressed and with plaits.

And he had a manual and acted role play with other paedos.

Not a scooby how they caught him but thank fck they did...could only have been a matter of time before he abused someone.

Five years seems incredibly soft. For comparison, a teacher at my son’s middle school got busted last week for sneaking in the boys bathroom with an iPad and taking pictures. Just been federally charged on two counts and is facing 15 years minimum on each count.

There are baths in schools, well I never

I should imagine that to coolect that number of pictures he would have been on some 'forums' etc, which unknown to this cretins are monitored, where possible.

That level of involvement would suggest a life sentence with maybe five years as a minimum.

And if it is not absolutely certain he has responded to treatment he can be kept out of society, for as long as it takes.

You raise an interesting point though.

At the risk of getting dogs abuse it has to be said he didn't act on his urges - as far as we know.

Pretty clear IMHO you are born with a mental defect where you are attracted to kids, you don't generally wake up and think that you might start to desire kids. So there is a big difference between that and someone acting on their desires and putting the kids through hell.

At the end of the day our nature is determined by how we are wired up.

Not sure what the answer is though and what the sentence should be as it is likely that those images were shot when the kids were going through hell - but that's not dissimilar to a middle class cocaine user as the end product has caused a lot of harm during it's travels - and I suppose half the population dabble in a bit of coke so where does that leave us?

Tricky one isn't it.

Not really, if you're in possession of illicit images of a minor it's a crime, so you get caught, tried and sentenced for up to 5 years (up to 10 if you take, make, circulate or intend to distribute).

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/indecent-images-of-children-guidance-

As for coke, you get caught in possession, tried and given an unlimited fine and or up to 7 years inside (up to life if you're supplying)

https://www.gov.uk/penalties-drug-possession-dealing

The law is pretty unambiguous, whether or not the way offenders are dealt with is unambiguous is another point entirely.

Yeah, but I was not really talking about sentencing guidelines - more life guidelines.

You raise some good (and difficult) points. "Wiring". What "flicks your switch". You are correct - there's nothing reported that he acted on his urges.

Crass "hot internet takes" on sentencing difficult legal cases is a mugs game. Spend the 5+ years learning the nuances before playing the expert.

If there's anything the last few years should have taught the bloke on the street is that the coked-up Michael Gove's advice to ignore experts was sh!t advice.

Listen to experts or pay the price.

But he was acting on them wasn't he.

Downloaded over a million images, role played-out the fantasy.

Manipulated himself into a position professionally where he could get closer to them. He was working up to the physical act and being such an active voyeur was already encouraging the abuse.

Incredible he only got five years as it stands, although his life will never be his own if the law does its job and he is monitored relentlessly for all days.

Personally I can see no argument for ever letting him out and he's best placed within the confines of a prison forever.

Poorly worded on my part. He was imho well down the path to physically abusing children.

Would hope that it is so clear he is a danger to children that the authorities will monitor and treat him to ensure that never happens.

I am not a hang em n flog em merchant, but I am someone who thinks the protection of children has to be the overiding consideration as/when he is released, if indeed he should ever be released? One for people who understand sex offenders ultimately.

Trigger warning: discussion of some details of this case, and other issues around sexual abuse.

"Pretty clear IMHO you are born with a mental defect where you are attracted to kids, you don't generally wake up and think that you might start to desire kids. So there is a big difference between that and someone acting on their desires and putting the kids through hell."

The development of sexual attraction is an extremely complicated subject and the nature v nurture debate isn't settled in one direction or the other.

Paedophilia isn't simply a matter of sexual attraction, however. It is an abusive way of relating to another person, in this case a child who has no say in the matter. Like sexual assault or rape of an adult, it is primarily about abuse, coercion and control.

In this case it simply isn't true to say that he didn't act on his urges. He photoshopped the face of one of his pupils onto Category A images. He did that. He did that for his own sexual gratification. A Category A image is the explicitly pornigraphic.

There is a known cycle of behaviours amongst sexual offenders, long established through research by criminologists and psychologists. Selecting a specific individual, and focusing upon them, is a long way into this cycle, and is only a short step from actualisation into directly abusing the individual.

The choice of profession, and development of a career up to the level of Head Teacher and Safeguarding Lead also shows a long-standing determination to gain access to young children. Alongside the "manual" referred to in the article, this person would have access to extremely sensitive case histories of individual children which would help him to select the most vulnerable and isolated, or those with parents who were least likely to be believed.

This is a very dangerous man who has been a threat to children for many years, with a consistent pattern of offending, unsupervised access to children, and who was networked with other child sexual offenders and in a position to supply them with information which would aid their offending, and even to appoint them to positions with unsupervised access.

Five years is too short, in my opinion, but since the Cameron Government, sexual crime policy has been all about reducing sentences in order to save money.

He was my son's teacher at Mendlesham.

Never once did we have any suspicions he would be capable of those offences.

I did have an issue with the then head teacher (he was just a teacher at the time) over a different safeguarding issue and it was quite an eye opener as to how little oversight she had (or wanted to, which was my issue). Looking back on it now there was no way he would have been found out by the school.

Struggling to process to be honest. He was always one of my son's favourite teachers. I'll let him know this weekend.

Just for context, I'm safeguarding trained and have been head of an organisation that requires quite stringent safeguarding processes. Nothing about him set any alarm bells ringing. He was a male primary school teacher, which has connotations, but other than that, nothing.

I can imagine it's hard to process.

Not sure being a male primary school teacher should have any connotations at all and I'm not surprised there were no alarm bells, the default is generally to trust people isn't it, and I dare say those who get up to such horrific things behind closed doors are probably good at acting normal out of the home.

Interested to hear that you'll let your son know, probably a difficult one as a parent to a kid of that age. No idea what I would do in that situation tbh.

I is absolutely my personal bias due to there being so few male primary teachers. Always struck me as a strange choice of profession.

Child3 is in Sheffield training to be a secondary maths teacher and is doing a presentation on safeguarding this week. What is hardest to process is he ended up becoming a teacher partly due to the encouragement he was given by all teachers, including that one.

Ahh apologies, I misunderstood when you said taught your son, I assumed it was recent and your son was still a young kid!

I respect anyone who goes into education, there's some brilliant teachers out there doing their best day in day out to educate the next generation, not just academically but morally and socially too. We all remember our favourite teachers. Good luck to your son.

I know a couple of male primary school teachers and they very nearly stopped pursuing the profession they now love because of fear of people making this connotation.

I don't think it's fair on the many male primary school teachers there are because of scum like this.

Absolutely shocking case and he really should serve far longer. We live in a terrible world at times
