A thought on defence… why not Wolf, Fridge AND Burgess 10:54 - Nov 20 with 2204 views | unstableblue | Wolfenden has played right back.. is right sided… Donacien is currently showing more attacking capability than Burns… and a more formal 3 would allow Davis to be an all and out wing back. Team ––––––- Walton ––- Wolf––Fridge––Burgee Donacien–––––––––Davis ––––––––––Morsy –––-Humphreys ––Edwards––––-Harness ––––––Ladapo Camara in the wings for Himorheys, Edwards, Harness Jackson and Ahadme for Ladapo or Edwards KVY for Donacien My eyes… it’s so beautiful

He’s playing a slightly different role this year within the position. He’s evidently been told to get more crosses in rather than dribble past people each time.

Don’t know whether this is actually real but I get the feeling that he’s playing a more disciplined role this season. He seems to be staying out wide and helping stretch the play, rather than cutting or drifting inside like he regularly used to last year. So perhaps he’s having his own attacking options restricted even if it overall helps the team. But just a feeling/theory and could easily be nonsense.

I think you're right in one sense as he is certainly deeper than what I would say was a free wide role last season. But there was one really obvious example on how something is just slightly missing this season where he went to tap and run as he did alot last year... he kicked it straight at the defender out for a throw, I didn't see him try it again after that..

Janoi isn’t a wing back though. I’d have KVY in that role. However, we aren’t pkaying a three, and although Janoi looked off the boil recently, he was back to his vest yesterday and I’d keep the back 4 as they are.

Keene might have tried it. Why not Chaplin at centre back ? He is a good footballer.

Even if we did, it would be JD right, Wolf middle, Cam left with either KVY or Burns as your wing back on the right and Davis left. No need for any drastic tactical changes though.

Plus, Donacien has been consistently our best defender playing in the role he has all season. Why would you move him away from where he is playing well? If something is working, don't change it!

Everybody keeps talking about Burgess winning everything in the air yesterday, but JD won everything in the air on his die of the pitch. I was all for giving JD a rest if he was injured but KM knows his players and he looked good yesterday.

After Walton and Morsy he is the most certain starter.

Come on Dubster… football forum and all that Let me repeat I don’t think burns is hurting the opposition enough, if he was on the form of last season, we might well be top! He’s not playing terribly, he’s linking well, and closing, but compared to say what edwards is doing in cameos it’s not enough. Chaplin is quite clearly by his body language not on his game. Yes perhaps Donacien isn’t a wing back, and pretty undroppable, but perhaps the resurgent KVY in the right wing back. Edmundson is a great player and can bring the ball out and pass. I’m just suggesting a way to get burgess, he and wolfy into the team, and get a different option to Burns. But yes we don’t have a problem at present… but we can play better. And we do not want to be the team from the 3 who doesn’t make automatic.

You are suggesting moving our best and most consistent defender out of the role he is excelling in so that you can get a different defender into the team in his position. You may as well suggest that Burgess plays as a centre forward as you think he should be playing, and you don't think Ladapo scores enough goals. The correct answer would be to bring Burgess in for Edmundson who has been a little inconsistent, rather like McKenna has done. I am sure Edmundson will get back in again before too long and will hopefully make himself undroppable when he does.

Do we need Woolfenden, Edmundson and Burgess in the XI at the same time?

A thought on defence… why not Wolf, Fridge AND Burgess on 17:23 - Nov 20 with 1480 views | LeoMuff | While I think Wolf could possibly do the Donacian role, I’m not sure why we would change something very successful. I would personally switch Burns for Edwards or KVY just to keep Burns on his toes or give him a rest, he certainly has looked jaded this season, though of course still dangerous at times, even when 1 on 1 he doesn’t seem to drive to the line as much as last season

I think even Woolfenden would struggle to replicate Donacien’s role. We might even be better off moving the spare man to the other side with Leigh who at least has a similar engine and pace to keep getting forward and dropping back as the role demands. On top of which Donacien really is our best one-on-one defender and doesn’t need that much defensive support from Burns or others. So he really does seem to be critical to how we want to set up on the right and release the attacking threat of Burns or a Jackson. And as you say, why change something that’s already very successful? I just hope we’re not forced into it.
