Is it fair to say that the football has been hit and miss at the world cup? 10:42 - Nov 27 with 1664 views | Dubtractor | A number of pretty turgid games so far, with a lot of caginess and cancelling out. Japan v Costa Rica the latest in that list.

Germany will qualify from this group on 3 points. Lose tonight matters little to them now.
Is it fair to say that the football has been hit and miss at the world cup? on 12:05 - Nov 27 with 1585 views | Stewart27 | Yes. Saudi Arabia and Japan failing to capitalise on their opening wins is a frustration. Especially as Poland and Costa Rica are absolutely terrible. There has been some absolute tripe in this World Cup: Qatar Wales Mexico Costa Rica To name a few.

Sadly that’s probably right. Japan really laid a turd today.

Is it fair to say that the football has been hit and miss at the world cup? on 12:51 - Nov 27 with 1541 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | A lot of teams in the World Cup these days, going to get some duds. It will open up and get going over the next week and then we get rid of a lot of poor teams. There's actually a few groups with plenty to play for which should see some interesting final group games as well.
Is it fair to say that the football has been hit and miss at the world cup? on 13:00 - Nov 27 with 1519 views | Steve_M | Yes, I imagine that the conditions and lack of a break from the regular season are big factors here, a month off lets players get over little niggles usually. I’m not sure that four matches a day helps with the enjoyment of it either, I’ve just dipped in and out knowing there’s so much to watch. Then again tournament football is normally a mixed bad early on. Two very good (and funny) comeback wins, France being good twice, England once and Iran - Wales have all been highlights so far.

We are being spoilt watching an attractive play football and managing to do so even when the opposition set up to stop us. That Japan v Costa Rica match was the far better attack against the far better defence and it was the defence that won.

Hopefully Spain qualify tonight, and effectively win the group, leaving them able to play out a bore-draw with Japan to send Germany home.

Anyone could qualify from Group F, there's no real standout team there. I picked Croatia and Canada to progress before it started, but half-way through we're no closer to knowing.

With an extra 16 teams participating in 2026 there are going to be a lot more duds and with 16 groups of three plenty of room for shocks.

I think the format will be poor. Only one team per group will be eliminated, and with some proper dross likely to qualify, the group stages will be dull because I doubt any of the new teams will have enough to shock the big teams. I suppose it increases the chance of upsets in the knockouts though - Argentina v Saudi Arabia and Germany v Japan would have been round of 32 games after the likes of Oman and Panama had been eliminated in the group stage. Is it fair to say that the football has been hit and miss at the world cup? on 14:42 - Nov 27 with 1336 views | J2BLUE | I've really enjoyed the football. It's felt like a proper world cup on the pitch. Hopefully there will be a few very uncomfortable moments for FIFA and Qatar along the way and a country like this will never get it again. Not much either of them could do if two of the European 7 get to the final and all walk out wearing the armband.

Nor if Japan win an entertaining encounter against the Spanish second string.

Some surprise performances from the likes of Canada etc has made the games more watchable imo. The 1 game that actually bored me was the England Iran game.

Is it fair to say that the football has been hit and miss at the world cup? on 16:30 - Nov 27 with 1186 views | wkj | The whole tourney is hit and miss. Without considering the FIFA corruption that made this possible, the fact its in the winter just doesn't work at all. I doesn't feel like a bunch of the players really want to be there either, the whole thing is just flat and uninspired.

Tend to agree, Costa Rica's 1 goal from 1 shot on target has pretty much saved them (Germany). [Post edited 27 Nov 2022 17:22]
