Anyone had any acupuncture? 10:32 - Jan 25 with 4692 viewsGavTWTD

I've currently got tennis elbow and my physio couldn't help me after several sessions. Both her and my GP recommended acupuncture so I had a session on monday.

I can't say its helped but I'm not expecting miracles after one session but she did say that I'd have a good night's sleep that night or the night after. I'm a terrible sleeper but I slept like a log last night.

Anyone have any experiences with acupuncture? I was very sceptical but wanted to try it before cortisone.

I’ve had acupuncture and like you was sceptical. Had always seemed to help each time have had it though.
Before you go for cortisone look at PRP. I’ve had it on my knee and it’s worked a miracle! Unlike cortisone it doesn’t damage the ligaments.

Acupuncture to relieve muscle tightness can work, although having a needle stuck in a know of muscle hurts like hell sometimes. It's helped a bit with some back tightness.

Acupuncture to cure some mysterious ill by sticking a needle in somewhere random on the other hand....

Sounds like your recommendation is more like the former case.

I didn't think GPs were supposed to recommend acupuncture as the vast majority of scientific studies show that it does nothing above the level of placebo but perhaps there are some new studies I've not seen.

So essentially, if you believe it will help then it might help. Probably slept well as it's quite relaxing to just lay there doing nothing during a session. If it's working for you then I'd keep doing it!

I have a dodgy lower back, and regularly see a Chiropractor, who sometimes used acupuncture. I was sceptical but have had good experience of it so far (other than when one of the needles hits a nerve!)

I've read the opposite, that despite not quite understanding the mechanism by which it works, it does work better than placebo for chronic pain.

I can't remember the exact study or studies, but here is a meta-analysis with roughly what I recall

I've had it from former Town physio Dave Williams - a claim to fame...!

Can't really say if it worked or not as was just part of ongoing treatment after an ankle op, but certainly didn't make it worse

I've had it for a trapped nerve in my shoulder and found it beneficial, the physio also put an electric current through which was "interesting"...

My GP had it to cure pain in his thumb and it worked for him. My physio also recommended it, so who am I to argue with them?

I didn't believe it will help but tennis elbow is on a shortish list of things they claim to be able to heal. I'll give it a few sessions more.

Yes, former. It's inflamation that can be cured by resting but its near impossible to rest it.

Several times, but no great results. A lot of physios do use it.

I had it for a frozen shoulder, administered by a mad elderly scotsman called Ranald MacDonald!

Complete recovery and very relaxing, if a bit spacey. Best not to drive immediately after if possible.

My chiropractor (not a notably "woo" person) explained it as drawing blood to the locale and providing distraction to pain receptors. She occasionally uses it as part of a treatment session.

Have you tried Acupressure (Shiatsu)? Worked brilliantly on my back, the only thing that ever did so, & I'd tried everything else incl acupuncture (tho only gave that one shot, so maybe I should have persevered).

Acupressure practitioners do the same course as NHS physios but then 1 extra year for the acupressure qualification (or so I was told by mine, but that was 20 years ago now).

Interestingly, my old dog, who would have made it plain if he objected to something, always stood stock still & relaxed for the acupuncture a vet gave him for his spinal condition. He had many sessions, & always seemed more sprightly on walks straight afterards.

Wasn't De Quarvains by any chance? I've had that since June and it's still causing me trouble. Not much physio could do apart from give some exercises that don't do much, so looking for something to help fix it.

I don't know but its worth a try. As the doc said, it's not going to make it worse. If it's good enough for my doc, physio and Ryorry's dog, its worth a go.

Ex-boss of mine was always skeptical of alternative therapies but tried it on a dodgy knee that nothing else would work for, and only because a doctor suggested it. He thought it would be a waste of time, but might at least be relaxing, and had nothing to lose. It cleared up his pain completely and he was stunned. Couldn't explain it and definitely didn't believe it would work, but it did.

I've said it before on here, just because science hasn't been able to explain something yet, doesn't mean it's all 'woo' or 'hokum' as some seem to think.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I have been having it for a couple of years now to address addiction issues. One hour once a week I lay on a bed, they stick pins in my earlobes and I spend the next hour in bliss. Not sure how it works but it does me good

A chiropractor used it on me to 'unlock' a back spasm so I could be treated. Worked amazingly well.
Definitely worth a go.

For any doubters who might think "well all dogs love attention" - that particular one (this was c 2007) was an exception who didn't, he disliked being patted or stroked, so it was amazing that he stood still for the vet to place the multiple acupuncture needles in.

Not sure there's any evidence that acupuncture does anything for tennis elbow.

Tennis elbow (or lateral epicondylitis) is an overload of the common extensor tendon where it originates at the elbow, causing it to enter a reactive phase, and eventually a degeneration if not treated properly.

Treatment really just involves boring stuff: load management and avoid aggravation; strengthen with boring exercise (wrist extensions); stuff like wearing an elbow strap (at the top of the forearm) to offload; even ice cube massage.

The first one on that list is the key. If you keep irritating and overworking the tendon it will never heal.

Should add that it can take as long as 6-12 months in some cases.

I've had acupuncture on my back and an achilles injury and it did absolutely nothing for either I'm sorry to say. However, some people swear by it, seems it's one of those things that either works brilliantly, or not at all, no middle ground.

I had an issue with my rotator cuff in shoulder and was very painful. I had a cortisone injection and it did the job. However, if it comes back again, I might consider accupuncture next time having read the replies here.

I wasn't offered accupuncture as an option, even though I went private.
