Season 20:53 - Mar 13 with 2273 viewsLeoMuff

Whatever happens this season progress has been huge, 70 points we finished on last season, and the Bolton win now takes us to 72 with 10 games to go, I know we have splashed the cash, but big credit to McKenna and team, that is impressive.

The only Muff in Town.

....then we start next season in the 3rd division.

If we don't go up then we have achieved exactly the same as last season.

Sod all.

That's all that matters.

Absolutely, but that won’t appease those who want everything now and will throw a tantrum if they don’t get it. We’re going in the right direction. As long as we continue to do so, we’ll be fine.

I agree with you but with a season as strong as this comes increased expectation of promotion and substantial disappointment if it doesn’t happen.

Imagine how MK Dons fans must feel after they finished third best in the league table last year but failed to win the playoff lottery and are now at risk of being relegated in the following season (not that I’m suggesting that could happen to us if we don’t secure promotion)

That’s a fair and realistic point. It also concerns me that I’ve already seen fans say “if we don’t go up then next season we’ll be favourites”
To fail this season would be a big concern so let’s get this done.

Indeed, I would worry about holding on to key players like Davis if we don’t go up.

So they circle. And more than one contracted player will no doubt be tempted. But given the age of a lot of them, they’re under contract and there’s no pressure to sell (as far as we know) so they won’t be leaving on the cheap.

If we don’t go up, we go again. The same suspects will be hoping to see McKenna gone but I will not join them. We are in a good place for next season come what may. We finished half way last year. Lots of teams between us and the top two last year. Not now.

We are progressing. While not being promoted would be a major disappointment, I trust what they’re doing and will go with progress. Will the pressure be on next season if we fail? Yes. But that’s the name of the game.

Personally I believe we will go up we have a great squad and team spirit. The players recognize that McKenna is improving them, most have stated they love it here and enjoy the training I really don't see them leaving if we don't make it this year certainly not for the championship and Premier teams won't seriously look at third tier players they want guaranteed success immediately.

If for eg Sheff Weds offer Leif Davis double his money and the Championship then of course he will want to go that’s how football works.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

I'm kind of with Blooters on this one, without being such a miserable sod about it. Semantics innit Muffers? "Huge progress"... "Impressive"... etc.

Progress for ITFC atm only counts for anything with promotion. I guess it all depends on how we go at it next season, if we fail to go up this one. Playoff failure would be devastating, to me. The players? Who knows.

Yes we've made great progress. However with all our resources, support, infrastructure and squad, anything less than promotion is failure.

We're definitely better. If we had this squad for the whole season I think the only thought now would be Town vs Sheff Wed for the title but we are where we are.

We have to finish the job this season. If we don't go up then this season has been a failure. I know that sounds harsh and i'm not for a second suggesting McKenna should go or anything like that as he has made us into a hell of a team now and I think we would win the league comfortably next season if we retain this squad but we should be able to be honest and say we didn't achieve the goal.

I really think we'll get second. The best realistic thing that could possibly happen would be Forest Green going and getting a point from Plymouth and we take second on Saturday. If we get second at any point I just don't think it will be taken away from us.

Truly impaired.

It's a fantastic run currently and it's showing the full potential of this squad.

Yes I get why people are quick to jump at those who weren't happy with things.. but the facts are if we do fail to get promoted it will be because of 3 month blip. It's just how it is. But I trust this current side more now to see the season out strong and even compete in the playoffs.

Next season will be even tougher imo.
Whoever comes down, who ever doesn't go up.. we've had 2 teams to fight since the summer. We allowed the others in.. I don't see next season being just a 3 horse race from the off so we will need to keep hold of some of our stars and recruit well in the summer to ensure we don't repeat this seasons problems.

But.. 10 games to go.. it's all to play for. Which I didn't expect 5 games ago.

a niche perspective

Do Blackpool, Wigan, Huddersfield potentially scare you that much if we do stay down?

Derby will be stronger next year, Bolton seem to be on an upward curve, Barnsley will be there or there abouts, Plymouth we would have to see with the loan players, Cooper might leave. if we manage to keep this group together and add 2 or 3 a better version of Burgess, a midfielder and potentially a striker, we would be very strong again.

Sheffield Wednesday were always going to be up there. Plymouth have been a bit of an anomaly. Barnsley were going to be up there come the end of the season.

We were right up there until we started throwing away leads.

That's now been addressed and we're right back in the mix again.

I've seen lots of progress this season and actually enjoy watching us play for the most part. Not to go up would be a disappointment, but I wouldn't see it as a failure given how much better off we are this season. Playoffs pretty much a guarantee and still in the hunt for top 2.

Let's not forget the mess that was inherited from Cook either...
