Which he may well have got from a Charlton or a refereeing board. It seems that we now have Sam Barrott and Stevenge have James Bell. Barrott has already awarded two penalties against us this season.

17 League One games 52 Yellow Cards 5 Penalties 2 Against us (vs Bolton - Leif on his debut, and vs Cambridge - Walton saved it) Both games he has reffed us in this season have ended 1-1 Edit: TWTD has rated him 5.7 and 5.6 on those two occasions, mediocre but not terrible especially since he awarded a penalty against us in each game. Ref swapped for Saturday.. on 09:50 - Apr 14 with 1840 views | Pinewoodblue | While it was probably right for Town to express concerns feel sorry for the referee who shouldn’t have been put in such an awkward position by EFL. Referees do their best to be impartial. If anything he would be more likely to over compensate rather than show bias against Town. Don’t remember any complaints from Taunton when a referee from Bury St Edmunds was in charge of their FA Vase game against Diss Town back in 90’s.

I think the EFL's bar for conflict of interest is probably very low (ie not your own team or direct rival) and this has only come about because his prior connection to Wednesday was made public. That's at least partially due to the ref himself. Without that information in the public realm I would suggest a lot of games probably would (and do) go ahead with similar situations. It would be very difficult for Joe public to distinguish bias from bad performance.

Think it is fair to say most of the decisions that have gone against us have been due to poor decision making rather than bias.

I don't necessarily disagree, but my point is that you have no idea what allegiances the ref may or may not have from game to game, because it's generally not public. Without that information being leaked and the subsequent pressure that brings to the game scenario, the EFL clearly saw no issue with the appointment.

Not the same in a cup competition though, league always far more important.

It's just so obvious to me. I am amazed to see even Town fans saying it wasn't necessary. The idea that a bloke that used to stand on the Sheff Wed Kop is not going to have any level of bias (conscious or unconscious) is complete bobbins.

In every other industry there is real work being done on dealing with unconscious bias, just incredibly obvious that once this was in public domain and club/fanbase aware it was wholly unfair on the guy to be in charge

It's really bizarre. If their game this weekend was being refereed by someone who had very publicly spoken about their depth of support for Ipswich then they'd be absolutely wetting themselves over it and demanding a different ref. Despite effectively being gifted 2 points against us from officials who couldn't or didn't want to see certain incidents, they still bleat on as though they were hard done by. Absolute fannies.

100% the buck stops with the EFL, a completely avoidable situation that they failed to avoid. You just know after all this we're going to get an absolute stinker of a decision against us and all those Wendies fans crowing about it will be enjoying that come 5pm tomorrow. Hopefully not though, big game innit. 3 points is an absolute must. I'm going as far as saying this game will determine the outcome of the season, which might sound OTT but I think IF we win tomorrow then we'll get top 2. I'm confident we would follow it up on Tuesday which should put us in a great spot for the final 4. Anything less than 3 points tomorrow and we'll be up against it IMO. Hooge game.

Ref swapped for Saturday.. on 13:52 - Apr 14 with 367 views | Vegtablue | Think your tongue may be planted in your cheek there Wally but what an awkward position to have placed Mr Bell in the first place! He divulged his support, and the extent of it, when in uniform and without prompt. Silly to then send him out to any of us four with this number of games to go. Enough teams in the EFL to keep the man busy over the weekend! FWIW I agree with others that he may have found himself subconsciously overcompensating. Our replacement hails from the area and may be a Wendy too, as pointed out by others and which would be a classic 'last laugh' move by the EFL, but whatever the answer he hasn't brought his allegiances into work - it's not asking much for a ref who keeps his loyalties at home lol. A judge or chairperson would have recused themselves in similar circumstances.
