A good observation, but outside of the parameters in the OP.

Which player from the current team on 15:40 - Apr 17 with 2149 views | itfcjoe | I think losing Hyam was, bar McGoldrick, the biggest blow that season and happened in the same game. Whilst Sears replaced McGoldrick well enough, and him and Bishop covered it up, we didn't replace Hyam and ended up with players like Chaplow dipping in and out of team. Therefore it has to be a CM for me, and whilst Luongo has been excellent, Morsy has been the man all season so for me it would be him

I don't disagree with that but in hindsight it's kind of surprising because Hyam was with all respects was a pretty limited player. In that season he appeared pivotal to a playoff chasing Champ side yet i think we have at least 2 if not 3 CMs better than Hyam in our current L1 team.

I think Hyam was a player that got a lot of stick as being limited, but the players that played with him spoke incredibly highly of him - McGoldrick was saying on the podcast with Kieron Dyer and Statman that he thought he would kick on from where he was but injuries held him back. I think there is a danger of overrating players in L1 currently where a lot of dross in the league that we can look very good against - the real challenge starts next year and a few will no doubt fall by the wayside

Up until Hyam got his first significant injury he looked like he'd push on and be a really good player. I think people tend to forget that somewhat now as his career totally fizzled out after leaving us, but that's largely because he was ruined by injuries.

Wasn't there an interview after a game in which he'd scored where he said that Mick had been pushing him to play further up the field and expand the attacking side of his game? Whsilt I don't think he'd have ever been more than a very good Championship standard player had he stayed fit, there was definite promise there.

For a while in that MM team he was a beast literally smothered teams with his work rate and energy

His use of the ball, whilst being no Pirlo, was also good. Very tidy footballer and had a great engine. Injuries properly ruined him though. That said, he still made 131 Championship appearances, which is nearly as many games as Morsy has played at that level. Back to the OP, I think Burns could have been an excellent addition that side. With Chambers and Anderson on that flank it was all a bit pedestrian, having Wes' pace and directness would have given us a lot more threat out wide. [Post edited 17 Apr 2023 16:51]

We didn't have enough ball carriers in that team and although Sears did well and gave us pace, we missed someone with the technical ability to play off Murphy after McGoldrick got injured.

Both Burns AND Broadhead are the sort of wingers Mick loved. Pacey, direct and a decent cross on them.

Just to clarify one more time.. on 18:25 - Apr 17 with 1505 views | unstableblue | 1) McCarthy was offered to strengthen in the January window by Evans but refused as he didn’t want to upset the squad dynamic 2) Whilst that season had some great performances and Murphy was on fire, we were regularly outplayed and outpassed by other teams, and even with 11 men we weren’t going to beat the better quality of play and system that Norwich, Brentford and Middlesborough

Point 1 isn't quite the whole truth. McCarthy said he didn't want to sign players and risk upsetting the squad, which was overachieving and greater than the sum of its parts, unless it was going to clearly improve the side. Given we were top 6 at the time that would have meant signing top end Championship players, and although Evans may well have offered him a small kitty, there's no chance we were going to spend £3m-£5m plus wages on one player, which is the minimum it would have cost to sign a top end Championship player at that time. Regarding the second point, we matched - arguably more than matched - Norwich up until the sending off. And we beat both Boro and Brentford that season. Brentford only took one point off us.
