Celina 21:46 - Jun 7 with 2651 views | the_toff | Wonder where he'll end up. 2 pretty disappointing loan spells for him last season and entering into the final year of his contract at Dijon. They've just been relegated again, will now be in the 3rd tier in France. Must be on a decent whack considering he signed for them in Ligue 1 and they'll be keen to shift him. Could see him going to USA or Saudi for the $ but wonder if the door is still open for him at Town. Champ experience and in an area of the pitch where we could probably use additional cover. McKenna seemed to be a fan of him and we were certainly keen to bring him back for a while. Not sure if Broadhead is seen as a replacement now though.

Maybe the closest he got to that was with us.... but still chose a club above us who offered more money ( he surely could have chose us for less wages if he really wanted to be here). For me... he's a mercenary. Pity... because hes wonderfully talented, but he chose quick money over a chance to become a better player under Mckenna and finally get a home. Saudi seems a good choice for him.

"he surely could have chose us for less wages if he really wanted to be here" Think its been pretty well documented on here that Celina was desperate to come back but we didn't do the deal. Hardly a mercenary ?

I thought it was documented that we were short in what we were willing to offer him. Never saw it documented that he was desperate to be here. In his position with Dijon, he didn't have to go to Turkey. He could have held out for a move here. Taken a pay cut ( but still on good wages) and got first-class coaching and a home amongst fans who like him. Irrespective of this - what in his CV makes us want to go down this route again where he's usually a sub? Do we really want an over-paid sub re who'll turn it on every once in a while?

I'm not saying we should resign him, merely pointing out that calling him a mercenary is inflammatory nonsense.

8 clubs. 9 years. Has a gift. You see it. But why can't he settle?

Whilst technically true, not sure 8 clubs in 9 years quite tells the story? His first club (Man City) send him on 2 development loans (Twente, Ipswich). When it's clear he won't make the grade there they sell him to Swansea, where he spends 2 good seasons before being sold to Dijon. It's only really after he join Dijon's death spiral that his career starts to look a bit nomadic.

5 of those clubs were loan moves. 2 of those were us. His parent clubs have been Man City who hoard players to loan them out, Swansea who he played for for 2 years without loans and Dijon who because of relegation then needed to loan him out to reduce the wage bill. I'm not saying I want him back but I wouldn't suggest his club history is purely down to him alone, more the realities of modern football.

"Inflammatory nonsense"... blimey.. bit strong. We're talking about footballers not professional killers. Mercenary is just a word that is often used in football. Just look at his CV... so many clubs and he's never settled... and it seems like he's always going for the highest bidder ( as opposed to carving out a steady career somewhere). | | | | Login to get fewer ads

He was desperate to come here, but Town moved on to Harness. Had they called him, he'd have done a deal, no doubt.

My life. Celina in L1 versus Harness. Chalk and cheese.

Yes and for all the good Harness did earlier in the season, I know who is a better player! Unfortunately for Celina, his move to Dijon has proved to be a terrible one at probably the most important stage of his career.

I would imagine Harness is on less money though. It might be that by signing him we kept a little more in the coffers... To waste on Camara.

Well as per Phil's Post, it is nonsense because he wanted to come here and it is slightly inflammatory?

While that is true, he could have signed for us without a work permit issue as we were a former employer.

I definitely can't help but think he'd have been a great asset to bring off the bench when we were wobbling slightly before January and occasionally struggling to unlock defences a bit.

He literally flew to Turkey to sign for them, trying to get something from us, did a runner and came back to UK and held out longer before finally, reluctantly, heading back out there to join them. I'd welcome him back, is a quality player and would fit nicely in our forward rotation.

Possibly not, although Harness's first half of the season form was a big part of our early season momentum. [Post edited 8 Jun 2023 13:54]

That's very true Steve. I think he went off the boil, then Broadhead's signing and subsequent form pretty much kept him out. It's easy to forget he started excellently, scored some really important goals at Forest Green, Burton and against Pompey. Exeter too, and denied what should've been the winner against Barnsley. That's not to say another player in that role wouldn't have scored goals either and might've cost less than £600k, but you could make a case that he won us a fair chunk of points in the first 1/3 of the season. Points that are no less valuable than those Hirst and Broadhead contributed to in the final 1/3. At 27 he must be worth at least what we paid, and played a role in getting us up. Looking at it that way he's proven valuable already.
