Should be 5 down.

We're 5 down now.

This bloody series. You can go from looking in complete control one minute to in trouble the next. 196/5 is a bit on a tightrope. This is the partnership that may make or break. Sub 300 at the Oval first dig is generally nowhere near enough.

Mind you, they did put us in and I'm only following by text updates on website so no idea what conditions are like.

Pretty pathetic.

In big trouble now. Pitch is not full of snakes.

Mindset, from picking Anderson at the Oval, is all wrong.

Its nipping about under the lights, but england have gone full gung ho.

Brook was batting well, but we'll be all out for <230 now I would think.

Moeen was injured, so was just swinging.
Stokes got bowled off stump trying to whip through mid-wicket
Bairstow played on wafting without moving his feet
Brook drove at a wide one without moving his feet.

its poor shots. We get into this mindset sometimes, that the only way when we lose wickets is to go harder... looks silly when it doesn't work

England are their own worst enemies sometimes, albeit I think it was a bad toss to lose.

300ish, and not quite possibly are not going to get them, might not be a bad score on here today. Am there for the next two days, do not want to be watching Smith et al pile on runs.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Did they deliberately place Duckett in between Crawley and Broad in the pre-play line up?

This looks ominous and shows the benefit of some proper batting at the top of the innings.

A well timed wicket. 283 doesn't seem a lot though at the moment.

The Oval is usually a high scoring wicket. 283 is poor.

Not been this season tbh. We're light, don't get me wrong, but 350 would have put us on top for my money.

It was overcast & quite humid all day. Even so I think you need 400+ batting first at the Oval. We threw wickets away really. Anderson looks finished, totally ineffective, averaging 82 now for the series. Tongue should have played. Wood & Woakes our main threat. Ali hurt his groin jogging for a single. He needs to join Jimmy in the retirement club. Never know what might happen tomorrow! I have a ticket for Sunday.

England were lucky they weren’t all out for under 200. The last couple of innings we’ve batted far more sensibly, then you get that utter nonsense again from them. It’s clearly an ego thing, but it looks so reckless, it’s not a one day game, but they bat like it. I was hoping they might have learnt, but they haven’t! Once again, the logic of selecting Bairstow, Ali and Anderson isn’t looking good, but when you have a huge ‘mates’ club as a closed shop, what do you expect? England have held the advantage in various points during this series and then with their daft approach simply given the ascendency away.

Nothing wrong with playing aggressively. It’s certainly ambushed lesser sides than Australia. But in long form cricket there is room for not throwing your wicket away, as Australia have proved.

Our team selection has been awful. Other than mates and fear of anything that wasn’t tried and trusted (against the spirit of Bazball), I can see no reason whatsoever for selecting Ali, Bairstow and Anderson (maybe the First Test for Anderson, but it was clear from his first game he was done).

With regards to these players why select them for the Oval Test? The Ashes are gone and so is an opportunity to introduce other/new players to the best opposition out there. All in all, it’s been an interesting series, but ultimately disappointing.

It is ego. We have players saying that its how they play and they will always go for it. Stupid if you are vulnerable outside a 6th off stump and can't resist. Im looking at you Mr Crawley.

It's not ego, it's tactics. This is the way that England have decided to play and it's managed to significantly transform our fortunes as a test side over the past 2 years. We've gone from being utterly hopeless to very competitive and that hasn't been down to a huge turnover of players, it's been down to a change in mindset and approach.

To be fair to Crawley, I'd say this has been his best series for England... he's made a fair number of runs, and the way that he and Duckett play has made Australia back off..... we've barely had any 50 opening partnerships since Cook/Strauss finished. These guys don't necessarily have the massive partnerships, but they do normally get us going.

Biggest issues for me, have been Joe Root not really doing enough, Anderson, obviously not quite on it, and Bairstow looks so short of form, notwithstanding smacking a demoralised Australia attack around at OT. He's defended his performance by pointing out that he hasn't kept for 3 years and that he is coming back from injury. The problem with that, is that he implicitly admits that he's not at his best, in which case, he should have recused himself and they could have got Foakes in... who would have probably scored as many runs, and not cost us the first 2 tests...

Crawley is the leading run scorer in the series isn't he, ahead of Khawaja? Khawaja has had one more innings of batting than Crawley as well.

It’s ego. The fact the Aussies dropped 5 chances and they still kept throwing their wickets away, utterly brainless. 283 is well below par at The Oval for a 1st innings total. They just don’t adapt.

Those stats are rather misleading. Take Crawley’s 189 out of the equation then he’d be way down the running scoring charts. On the eye, Crawley is very exciting to watch when in full flow, but he still doesn’t deliver often enough.

So if you randomly exclude some of Crawley's runs then he's no longer the leading run scorer? Thanks for that insight.
