This is getting messy. I was close to posting a goal notification on this thread and a wicket on the other one.

But the way that they have got to those positions is by playing positively. You can't have the benefits of those, and then ask them not to play that way.

It’s about being more measured, if wickets are tumbling still keep going for your shots?! Think of some of the innings during this series if we had batted less frenetically and just played with more control we’d have really ground the Aussies into the dust. Instead we’ve thrown those advantages away. We could be leading this series heading into this test match. That’s what I find frustrating.

If you're too circumspect when the ball is doing plenty, you're just waiting to lose your wicket and not moving the game forward. We might lose the odd sloppy wicket but at this point, a quick 283 yesterday looks a decent enough knock.

I was about to type that I would be happier if we had Smith out but then Starc hit one up in the air so maybe there's not going to be anyone to stay with him. 185/7.

This has been really baffling stuff from Australia. A circumspect first half of the day which, while keeping wickets in hand, led to them going absolutely nowhere. Now when they want someone to stick around with a man who averages 60 in test cricket, they have Carey and Starc basically throwing their wickets away.

We should've bloody won this series, we really should.

FFS, they got away with that one there. Third umpire had to make that decision but Smith was walking.

Would've been comical to have seen a run out from a sub fielder, especially if Ponting was on duty in the comm box.

The Aussies aren’t out yet, so let’s see who has the lead after the first innings are completed. Circumspect might yet prove the right approach.

Ponting reckons he was out. I think he got away with one there. But yeah, he's nailed on to get runs now he's had that reprieve. In a low(ish) scoring game, the runs he's already added are very handy indeed.

Mark Butcher was sat next to Ponting on commentary and definitely liked that aspect of it.

It was out, Smith was walking but I think the third umpire had to make that decision given the TV evidence wasn't 100% conclusive either way.

Ah, Cummings get a reprieve too, rather less contestably that time.

That one that took Cummins' edge as he was trying to get out of the way, 9 times out of 10 that goes to the keeper or one of the slips but this time it flies down leg for four. We're still bowling well but not getting a lot of luck. Still think Smith should have gone as well, I will not be convinced otherwise.

It's also been pretty good batting by both Smith and Cummings, far better than anything else Australia have managed today.

And then Smith hits one up in the air but gets away with it....

Although Smith then does it again and Bairstow takes a decent catch. 239/8

They've shown more intent for sure, but had more than their fair share of luck too. That one from Smith could have gone anywhere. Finally gone now, but nearly 30 runs more than he should have got with that run out reprieve.

We've not bowled very well with the new ball. The run out has really made us go flat having had all the momentum.

12 behind at the end of the day and not enough time to bat and lost a wicket. We let Murphy score too easily but that's not a bad day really.
