Sometimes i have the most most left field thoughts 20:14 - Oct 20 with 4095 viewsnodge_blue

Im watching the start of the rugby and im thinking

1. The haka must be cultural appropriation. Largely white guys performing a native dance when years ago that dance would have been performed against their ancestors.

2. Then i saw Argentina as basically white spanish colonialists too. Which makes me wonder why their version of colonialism makes them think of the malvinas (spanish name?) As theirs. Its like the large colony believes they should own the small colony. Of course neither should have been there.

All that going on in my head as i watch the anthems.

Now ill watch the rugby.

Funnily enough I was thinking as I watched the Argies watch the Haka that their supporters are probably having a love in with the French and laughing about Excorcets and the fact that France.gov didn’t give us the kill switch code.

Maybe some people were just considering whether new Zealand lamb is better than Argentinian beef.

Now you have me thinking that the Malvinas are much more likely Argentina's than ours!

And whether they go best with NZ Pinot Noir or Argie Malbec.

On the NZ public holiday of Waitangi Day (6 Feb), New Zealanders in London dress up in various national costumes. The time I actually saw this happening, most of them were Harry Potter characters.

They set off on a clockwise journey around the circle line, starting at South Kensington. They alight at every station and have a drink.

Twenty pints later they arrive at Westminster, where they all assemble for a completely rat-arsed attempt at a haka.

The Argentines use an argument that the British have only been in The Falklands for one hundred and seventy five years. However there is a South American tribe called the Mapuche who were initially conquered by the Spanish but then fought back. They held various bits of Argentina and Chile for about three hundred years and were only fully subjugated in the 1920s. So when I was out there I was all ready for the Malvinas question with 'just as soon as you give the Mapuche back their homeland 'cos that is a more recent colonialisation' but the Argentines are generally far too pleasant to bring these things up so unfortunately (well, fortunately probably) I never had the chance to lay that jibe on them.

Weirdly, when I worked in New Zealand (during a Rugby world cup) I was accosted by an Argentine woman. She heard my accent and almost ran over to start berating me about the Falklands.

Was a very weird interaction given she was surprised I was no fan of Maggie either. Wanted me to know emphatically she was a "babykiller" and hated in Argentina.

So, in summary, the Falklands should belong to penguins and the Belgrano should still be afloat. I hope you enjoyed the rugby!

You didn't try and point out that really it was Galtieri who was the real 'babykiller' for sending raw recruits over to defend recently won territory against professional soldiers then ? To which I suppose the counter argument is that Thatcher didn't have to send a task force but that is a whole other tangled web to get into. I did feel a bit uncomfortable staying in a hotel on Avenida Belgrano when I was in Buenos Aires, but then I found out thet was named after a General from the wars of independence from the Spanish.

There is a difference between cultural appropriation and sharing culture.

One is seizing something without permission, the other is being invited to be part of something.

It is indeed, which is why I felt a bit uncomfortable. I was certainly offended by a street named after HMS Sheffield I saw in a town at the north end of Patagonia.

I took the "but then I found out" as a suggestion that reduced your discomfort rather than reinforced it.

I think to strictly apply that logic, the falklands would be full of penguins and the Belgrano would never have existed. I’ve learnt below that belgrano was a general who fought in a war of independence from Spain. But that still sounds like a Spanish Colonial) name to me.

I thought the rugby was very dull. Too one sided. Lamb conquered beef.

The usual "solution" to that problem is to displace them with nationals from where you want the land to belong to instead.

It is remarkable the role the conflict over them played in our own political history.

We can also see where that "solution" has led to far too often.

So the Spanish shouldn't have been in Argentina.
Equally, the Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Normans & Vikings shouldn't have been on our islands & they should have been left to the Celtic Britons, although some of them originated from Gaul (or France).
Awkward stuff, history.

Blimey, a male Argentine Liz Truss.

Glad I went when I did now. More seriously, the inflation and currency erosion is crippling in Argentina. And yet they have so much natural wealth: oil, agriculture, lithium, plenty of sunshine for solar power and so on.

Leaving aside all his populist stuff, the Argentinian electorate need a quiet chat with some Greeks before they dollarise the economy.

Totally giving away control of monetary policy to a foreign power is an "interesting" approach for an economist to advocate, especially one who is trumpeting nationalist rhetoric.
