Was it a mistake getting rid of him?

No. Kieran knows exactly what we need. Next question.

Greg Leigh . on 17:51 - Oct 21 with 5539 viewsChurchman

Nope. He rightly wanted first team football and as things stood in the summer he wasn’t going to get it.

Good player, great character, proper professional. it was a shame to lose Leigh, but I’m really pleased for him that he’s doing so well at Oxford.

Nope. Just your classic win win situation. Right for all parties. He's playing more advanced. He was never going to be ahead of Broadhead, Hutchinson or Harness in the pecking order.

Glad he's enjoying his football. (Hope we have a sell on fee though if he keeps ripping it up!!)

No, he's not starting instead of Davis. If, as I've seen suggested, he's playing further forward this season, would have Broadhead and Hutchinson ahead of him there. Still a good player, but his squad slot has allowed us to bring in other decent signings.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

no, it was the right thing to do for all parties, we can't just stockpile players on the off chance that we might need them.

everyone knew leigh (and edwards), have the skills to be excellent league one players, so we shouldn't be surprised they're doing well

He wanted regular football, and he's not getting that over Davis, innit. Good luck to him, and Edwards indeed.

He is not playing as a wing back any more though . But it was right to allow him to move to get more game time . Think it's 6 goals this season from his midfield role .

No.

In the LB position, he's not ahead of Davis and in the AM role he is playing for OU in our team, he wouldn't be ahead of the likes of Broady, Chappers etc.

He was too good to be a squad player for us and rightly wanted first team football.

The fact he's doing so well is great to see and, I am sure, no doubt in part due to his time with us under KM and the team - great to see he's doing well but the the right move to everyone.

I really hope Greg checks in here occasionally and knows what high esteem he's held in here. Top man.

No.

He’s never getting in ahead of Davis and he’s now proving that he should be starting every week. If we didn’t have one of the best full backs in the championship then he would be starting for us.

We didn’t ‘get rid’. He asked to leave in search of starting every week.

No, because Leif Davis is better.

It really is that simple.

I like Greg and I’m pleased he’s doing well at his new club, but he wasn’t ever going to be first choice ahead of Leif, and he knew it, hence why he made the right choice for his career - and good for him, it’s paying off.

I have absolutely no doubt he is however reaping the benefits of being coached by McKenna and our staff in his time here, hope he goes on to have a fine career as I'm pretty confident he will.

I'd love to know what Oxford paid for him. Possibly around £100k mark I reckon. An absolute bargain I imagine. Can't see them having paid much.

Not for me.

I really liked him as a player and was sad to see him go, but he wanted more than we could give him and the move has worked out really well for him.

I'm really pleased for him.

Yes it was a mistake. We would be 3 points clear at the top and with a game in hand had we kept him and played him instead of Davis. Instead we are 5 points off the pace and dropping like a stone. Could easily be 8 points behind before we play again.

I think he has done somewhat more than just score yesterday. He was the player of the month for League 1 last month. He was always a very solid squad player for us and would have been at this level I am sure. However, as mentioned further up the thread he was clear that he wanted first team football and he wasn't going to get that here. The good will allowing someone in that position to make the move helps with everyone in the squad realising that the club is interested in their best interests as well as the club's. That goes a long way to helping ensure everyone wants the club to do well.

No, too good to be a back up. He and Edwards should be playing in a high end league one team at worst so they both deserve first team football.

Aside from everything else that's been mentioned, we essentially replaced him with Brandon Williams. I like Greg Leigh and he's a good footballer, but you'd have a hard time arguing the case that Williams doesn't represent a significant upgrade.

Happy for Greg (who really like), as he deserved and needed 1st Team football which he’d not have been getting with us this season. So moving was the right thing but maybe should have been via a loan. After all there’s no guarantee we keep those ahead of him in LB/LWB/AMF positions if we fail to get promoted. Esp Brandon, Omari, Nathan or Leif. Greg could then have been a great recall. As it is we got maybe 100k which is sweet FA really.
