Living / Retiring abroad. 21:58 - Dec 2 with 3091 viewsDeano69

If you had the opportunity to live or retire abroad, where would it be and why?

I have been lucky enough travel a reasonable amount including all continents, but haven’t quite found a place I have thought ‘you know what, I could live here.’ Being on holiday is a bit different to living somewhere I guess.

Years ago I had planned to retire in Thailand.

Now I have grandkids that doesn't seem so realistic, in fact I miss the motherfeckers so much after just two days that even Spain in now impractical.

I'm saying IP4

Western Cape, New England, Coastal California, Auckland, Melbourne.

I'd happily try Bilbao or San Sebastion, Copenhagen or Amsterdam closer to home.

I drove around a fair bit of Western Cape in March.

Have to say it's the most beautiful place I have ever been in my life.

I’ve lived abroad for spells in different areas, always due to work. Now I’ve got kids I would find it a bit harder to move abroad I think. If I did it would have to be Europe now, proximity to the UK is too important for me at the moment. If pushed I’d say Southern Ireland as my wife comes from there and all her fam is over there so it would be an easy move to make. Not that I would fancy living over there tbh. Other than that maybe France, nice rural area in the middle of the country. Nice weather but not silly hot, slower pace of life, cheaper property, nice cheese & wine, easy to get back from.

I semi-retired 5 years ago and moved to the Catalan Pyrenees. I don't think I could have chosen a better location although Lagos' choice of northern Spain would be a good shout.

Whats the score getting permanent residency post Brexit? I know Portugal is doable if you have a spare 500k euros to buy a property (I don't)

There was a similar deal here until recently called the golden visa but that's been binned as I think there were too many mafia types getting residency, Russians mainly.

I moved here in 1987 so lived and worked illegally for a couple of years, then got a residency permit via a dodgy boss, Spain joined the EU a couple of years later but when Brexit happened Spain behaved impeccably and provided a hassle free Brexit special permit.

I believe now that we're back to the situation I originally faced that to work here you need a work permit but to get a work permit you need to work here. I don't know what the situation would be for retirees, probably that you need to spend a few months out of the country each year but that's probably not hard to get around.

Not sure it counts but the Cairngorms in Scotland. It's so beautiful and serene.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

America. If you have money, you have literally anything you want.

I’d have a very comfortable place at Deer Valley Utah for the winter and California for the summer.

British Columbia Canada is wonderful too and the people are a bit less up their own chuff.

If I had the opportunity I really would like to retire to Monewden with my pet Shoebill, Arthur. We'd lay on the settee all day watching repeats of George and Mildred, only getting up to feed, toilet, and to take delivery of Pizza's delivered to our door by "Petes Pizzas of Pettistree". What a life.

So there’s three places I’d happily move to if the process wasn’t as complicated.

Australia, Canada or New Zealand.

Did have the ‘I could live here’ thought when I went to the States in 2008.

Obviously i'm going to say australia.

But my parents have bought a house in rural NZ to retire to and love it.

My retirement home will be in Edinburgh, but my hope is that I will be able to spend 4 to 6 months a year in New Zealand, at least for the first 5 to 10 years of retirement.

UK citizens can visit NZ visa-free for 6 months at a time.

I've been living in California, near the Mexico border and about 1 mile from the sea for 15 years.

Life is life, you have the same challenges and boring tasks life washing clothes or fixing stuff but it's so much easier when you can go out in shorts and a t shirt 90% of the time.

It's expensive out here, average house price in my area around $3million, but the wages are better than in the UK. Overall, if you are smart, well qualified and prepared to work hard in any industry you can get a higher standard of living than in the UK, IMO.

Best of both worlds would be a place in east Anglia for the beautiful English summers (avoid the peak of the heat here) taking advantage of the cheap meditaranian holidays too, then in around October duck out of the monsoon season until back to SoCal around the next July

Had peameal bacon in Canada recently which was pretty nice...can’t you get that in the US too?

Forgot that. The American version of salty, cremated streaky is not a good thing. Not keen on their hot dogs either or their desserts come to that (too sugary). Reece’s chocolate is vile, but the Milky Ways (Mars) and Kit Kats are ok.

Might need a rethink!

I would struggle living there. I've never liked the place, maybe because a lot of Americans are as this as sh..... and they have an annoying habit of thinking Brits are Australian.

Southern Germany - either Bayern or Baden Württemburg. Beautiful scenery, a great quality of life, and a very nice climate; warm summers and proper winters.

Es hilft, natürlich, dass ich auch Deutsch sprechen kann!

In Spain there is the non-lucrative visa for those not planning to work, such as retirees.

https://www.exteriores.gob.es/Consulados/losangeles/en/ServiciosConsulares/Pagin

https://myspainvisa.com/non-lucrative-visa-spain/

To apply for this visa, candidates must demonstrate a minimum monthly income of €2,400 (400% of IPREM). Additional income is €600 per month (100% of IPREM) for each additional family member.

As regards where I would like to retire, it would have to be the south of France, in a place such as Cannes or Antibes. But that's probably in my dreams.

Non lucrative visas in Spain are easy enough to get if you have some money behind you or a decent pension.
Whilst Spain can be annoying sometimes I love the place and will never leave

Having experience of the Spanish legal and administrative system, including helping my son obtain a student visa recently, I am not sure that "easy" is quite the right word to apply in relation to Spain.

Indeed, having got a visa for my son (no easy task with the need for apostilles, translations etc), I arranged an appointment for a residence card for him when I came out with him to help him settle in, only to be turned down for no obvious reason. We were told he had to go to the Foreigners' Office in Malaga who told us that that we did have the correct paperwork. So I arranged another appointment for him at a different police station who granted the application.
