Yup. Not a big vote of confidence in Ben Johnson, that. But you can count on one hand how many good games he's had. Interestingly, Jelert is more of a Leif Davis-style right back i.e. great dribbler, tenacity and engine.

And someone that can play on the outside of Hutchinson if he plays on the right? A Harry Clarke upgrade if you like?

Yeah, I would say that's exactly right. A better fit for the 4-2-3-1 system. Plus, if Axel has plans elsewhere next season (which is what I'm led to believe) this is good succession planning.

So Godfrey, Johnson, H Clarke, Tuanzebe (and Burns) and now another one? I was confused yesterday, even more so today
Elias Jelert on 11:54 - Jan 22 with 6446 views | WeirdFishes | This would be very confusing to me. We’ve just added Godfrey, Axel is back, why would we sign another RB when we have Johnson and Burns who can also play the role?

Can see a Champion's League level team somewhere in Europe going for Axel.

Because Johnson has been fcuking awful and Burns, despite his recent improvement in form, isn't a Premier League right back.

Because Johnson's been hugely underwhelming and Burns is now 30+? Is Wes realistically going to spearhead us bouncing back if we go back down? I'd be inclined to say not.

Either way it's not great news to sign three right backs in a season (when we already had two on deck coming in). Going to perhaps be some rushed exists in the next 10 days.

Burns isn't a right back, Clarke has barely played a game (Even McKenna says he needs a loan somewhere) and Johnson has spent most of his time playing at right mid. If Woolfie goes as well, I suspect Godfrey would be viewed as centre back cover for O'Shea and Tuanzebe and Jelert for the right back role.

I think even that's being generous tbh, I think he's had 2 halves of decent football from memory and he looked so far off the pace against City (not the only time this season) it was actually embarrassing.

That's a blow if Axel is going to move on, but the lack of anything happening on a deal has pointed in that direction anyway.

Fair. Still makes the Godfrey signing very odd if it comes off and feel we have bigger priorities to spend money on.

On the face of it, yes. However, Axel is out of contract. Harry Clarke, bless him, just isn't quite up to it. Johnson hasn't worked out. So, given the need to improve the 'squad' which we know the Club needs and wants to do and then factoring in the above, it's possibly not that surprising.

He was brilliant for the first 5/10 minutes. He wasn't giving Doku any space. Not sure what happened after that, was he knackered?

That’s why I put Burns in brackets, and agree re Clarke, however I guess I hoped for the obvious gaps to be filled before we spent on another right back. While Johnson and Burns might be considered competing for the hybrid wing back/midfield role, we’re about to get another 10/right sided loan in Ensiso, to add to Hutch, who’ll play in more advanced roles. All of this when we are crying out for a striker, in McKenna we trust, but I’m still confused

He's the sort of player we need to be signing, not losing but maybe he's got himself into a position with us that means he can move on to something better. If that's the case, then it's a good thing, sad to see him go but he's worked well for us.

They started moving Godfrey around so he couldn’t support BJ as effectively. Once they’d done that, Doku was free to run at the defence and that led directly to the first goal, and most of the others actually.

City changed their approach to drag Godfrey to the middle (got their central midfielders to push up) which left Johnson exposed.

We are allowed to be negotiating for players in multiple positions, aren't we? Or do we have to do it one by one?
