I wonder if we'll end up regretting letting Morsy go? on 18:24 - Aug 1 with 2033 views | PioneerBlue | I don’t fully understand why he wasn’t allowed to leave at the end of the window or at least once we had secured adequate midfield depth ahead of season. However I do get the season hasn’t started and we probably wanted to allow the team to move beyond as they start the season. Depth wise it seems odd at this moment in time. [Post edited 1 Aug 18:31]

If he decided he was leaving I guess it didn't matter when he left. Doubt he was going to change his mind depending on who we did or didn't sign.
We've replaced Morsy already..... on 18:35 - Aug 1 with 1943 views | Bloots | .....it's Cajuste/Phillips/Luongo and Delap that we haven't replaced yet. Birmingham will be licking their lips at the thought of Hirst/AAH and Matusiwa + Taylor/Humphries. Meh. Bring it on. Take a draw.

I wonder if we'll end up regretting letting Morsy go? on 18:42 - Aug 1 with 1878 views | homer_123 | No. He's been brilliant for us and whilst he could certainly do a job this season, he's not the future. Morsy, genuinely has been fantastic for us and I'm so proud he's been an integral part of our fabric and DNA.

I mean, he just needs to be the present, not the future. More points per game than any of our other midfielders last season, including the one we're desperately trying to lure back with millions. The guy was under contract and we tore it up for free. Seems like a really strange decision to me. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

....the first game of the season is worth the same amount of points as the first one after the window closes. We could do really do with being a bit stronger going into those tough early games. If later in the season, due to injuries, we have a run of matches with only one decent striker and a weakened midfield then people would be concerned so it's OK to be concerned now as well. Balls.

Not massively wrong, though. We’re woefully short of backup in the 9 position.

And before anyone shouts, he’s not the future - we’ve just signed a 40 yo.

Well, it wasn't really calling you a name, like a 5 year old calls someone stupid, more, that's a stupid thought. Our lineup is impressive, the bench may be missing a couple, but the starting 11 is only missing a central midfielder.
I wonder if we'll end up regretting letting Morsy go? on 20:13 - Aug 1 with 1391 views | vilanovablue | Morsy probably knew there was an offer, got it sorted in the background and left. I genuinely don't believe there's anything sinister in this.

I wish him and his family all the happiness and prosperiy they can glean from this life-changing opportunity. All I ask is that they can all be present at FPR on the 17th of August to hear one last rendition of "He's Eqyptian".

I wonder if we'll end up regretting letting Morsy go? on 05:29 - Aug 2 with 832 views | lurcher | No, he was poor last year and we have replaced him with Matusiwa. O'shea is the new captain. Taylor and Matusiwa will be more than enough for Birmingham. We will get further CMs by the time the window closes.

Agree with this. I’d also say that it was Morsy who took the option to leave. Don’t know the bloke but his track record says he tends to move on after about four years and he might well have been looking for a new challenge - or in this case, at his age a dirty great pay day. It’s a great move for him and to hold on to a player who wants to move on can never have a good outcome. Never forget they are employees and most will see a club differently to supporters. I was privileged to see him lead the team and he will rightly go down as a club legend/hall of fame figure in the future. It was a good end to his time here.
I wonder if we'll end up regretting letting Morsy go? on 07:41 - Aug 2 with 599 views | ringwoodblue | I think we will miss him massively. Before he left I was confident of promotion again this season but now I’m not so, that’s how important I think he was.

I wonder if we'll end up regretting letting Morsy go? on 08:07 - Aug 2 with 505 views | Len_Brennan | KMcK wants 2 quality players for each position. We think Matusiwa is going to be an excellent signing for us in the defensive/holding midfield role, alongside (hopefully) Hackney in the double pivot, who will have greater licence to push forward. Morsy has shown us just how capable he is to play that defensive role at Championship level & would be an outstanding alternative to have to Matusiwa over the course of a long season, with plenty of midweek fixtures. It will be very difficult to replace that ability & experience, but it will also be very difficult to convince another player of his calibre to join the club, knowing that Matusiwa has been signed to be first choice in that position. Hackney & Cajuste would be signed to play the Luongo role, for which we already have Taylor & Humphreys as potential reserves, but the defensive midfielder position is key, so an early season injury to Matusiwa could really hamper us if we don't have a capable back up. Now that's purely footballing analysis response to the question - i.e. Yes we could well end up regretting it. However, there is of course an emotional & decency element to be taken into consideration too. Morsy didn't want to be playing second fiddle to anyone while in the Championship & seemed a little disappointed by being pushed out a bit over the last few months - there was that little dig at O'Shea's results when he had the captain's armband - after all he had done/given for the club over the course of 2 promotions. We could have kept him here to see out the last year of his contract, but I don't think anyone would have wanted that once he made up his mind, & seeing an unhappy Sam Morsy on the bench would have been a terrible way for his career to end here with us. I think we may regret letting him go, but it was the right thing to do, for all parties
I wonder if we'll end up regretting letting Morsy go? on 08:10 - Aug 2 with 485 views | OldFart71 | I just hope if the targets that are currently being sourced fall through we don't just get in someone on a knee jerk reaction. We must not be too critical of the club as the targets are maybe aiming high. It is always difficult given we were demoted. Players always move on and we had a mixture of ones that were like Morsy and Loungo in the twilight of their careers , we also had two midfielders on loan, Cajuste and Phillips so basically our midfield has disappeared and all to one degree or another were class players. Delap was always going to move given that the sell on clause was so low. Again, very difficult to replace as we have no real scouting abroad set up properly and players of his calibre are either not available or would cost £50-60 million.
