GK position 09:23 - Aug 18 with 2699 views | tractorboy1978 | Palmer is absolutely woeful with his feet and I am not just talking about his short passing out from the back. There was a number of times when he kicked 'long' (but it was well short) absolutely nowhere near his target. This was what he did at Birmingham and a big reason we conceded. He also seems to need a couple of touches to get the ball under control half of the time. Do we think we will be looking for another keeper before the window shuts?
GK position on 09:25 - Aug 18 with 1991 views | Metal_Hacker | I don't think we'll be looking for another keeper personally although I'd take one but more so I'm hoping Palmer won't be required too often to actually get involved !!

GK position on 09:28 - Aug 18 with 1922 views | Kieran_Knows | It’s as big of a priority as a new striker/centre mid/winger. We have to sign a new keeper, and I think we’ll regret it if we don’t.

GK position on 09:29 - Aug 18 with 1917 views | portmanking | Yep, he can barely reach the halfway line unopposed. As for his short game, well, it's just suicidal for us to be sticking with this. Shame he turned down the chance to have the Angus Gunn role at Forest earlier this summer.

We haven't got it right since the rather silver lined cloud that saw Hladky cement his place in THAT team. Muric was a total disaster, sorry to say. One of the very few things I was right about at the start of last season. I felt very sorry for him and no one deserves (or plays better) when groaned at but that doesn't alter the fact he was hopeless when in posession. Absolutely key position to upgrade.

GK position on 09:35 - Aug 18 with 1793 views | thebooks | I think “absolutely woeful” is a bit strong. On the whole OK yesterday, but I think Muric and Hladky were naturally better with the ball. Still, might just be a whole midfield/defensive/GK thing and working out the patterns/confidence. We played out a lot from the back yesterday in the second half, and it worked well. Could be looking for a keeper, though.

He's going to be getting more involved with his feet than he was last season. So it is an even bigger issue.
GK position on 09:45 - Aug 18 with 1669 views | billlm | Better to try n get the keeper and standard we need now, as if we're lucky enough to go up they won't have to bed in from scratch or were back to quare one,, Palmer isn't the answer going forward, A stop gap, And decent number two if we're promoted short term, | | | | Login to get fewer ads

To be fair I'm hoping the ball is going to be up the other end of the pitch ...but that's just me

Bring back Vaz from Burnley Reserves.
GK position on 09:57 - Aug 18 with 1554 views | bsw72 | Fans are doing the same to him as they did to Muric, but for different reasons and you can feel the nervousness in the crowd everytime he now gets the ball, and it's starting to affect him more and more. Personally I think that Muric would have been a great option for this division (problem in the Prem that most mistakes got punished), but that ship has now sailed, but I also think that a vocal subset of fans would never have let him settle again. Going to market again will take more time and not be gauranteed to solve the issue - everyone thought Palmer was the solution in January - it takes time to understand the nuanced role and skills of a goalkeeper. Now we have got through the first couple of tough games, let's just knuckle down and let the team settle, coach and adjust how we play.
GK position on 09:58 - Aug 18 with 1538 views | surreyblue | I think the challenge will be getting a premier league quality keeper in this summer. I doubt we would want to sign a keeper now and then another new one next summer. If one becomes available I'm sure we will jump on it.

GK position on 10:02 - Aug 18 with 1492 views | NedPlimpton | I suspect this is something we're working hard with Palmer on in training, rather than looking for a new GK. It was obvious on Sunday that he had been instructed to play out from the back more and although he gave me several heart attacks, I'm hopeful he'll improve In fairness in our first game in the championship last time around, Hladky also had me reaching for the defibrillator!

Okay, next summer. I imagine we will want to get promoted, then probably will spend a big lump on an established keeper.
GK position on 10:04 - Aug 18 with 1475 views | waveneyblue | For what its worth I would be absolutely amazed if we went after another keeper this window. Appreciate Palmer is flawed, but the vast majority of Championship keepers are. The Premier League teams (especially the big boys) will have 3 very good keepers each and that makes the really good ones (above Championship level) very difficult to sign unless your paying mega money, which we wont. Palmer is decent, but its certainly not going to help him if the crowd are getting nervous everytime the ball goes near him. Oh and Ps. Hladky has definitely got better in people's heads since he left....

I don't feel like the crowd were particularly nervous at all. If anything, it seems many people are quite laid back about it and missing his lack of quality with his feet. The long kicking is even more concerning for me. There must have been half a dozen or more occasions yesterday when he played the ball up towards Hirst and was absolutely nowhere near him.
GK position on 10:10 - Aug 18 with 1403 views | PrideOfTheEast | Begs the question as to why on earth we signed him in January. Some of our recruitment, actually lots of it, has been very questionable. FWIW I don’t see us addressing it in this window.
GK position on 10:15 - Aug 18 with 1328 views | _clive_baker_ | You can tell a lot about how comfortable a keeper is with their feet based on their body language. He looks like he doesn't want the ball and never quite feels like he knows what he wants to do with it. You get the impression he's winging it, rather than has any clear idea in his head before he receives the ball. All 3 goals we've conceded this season have been soft, and 2 of them due to poor keeping. Its not solely on Palmer though, I don't think Taylor or Matusiwa have looked especially comfortable taking the ball in tight areas like Morsy often did and to be fair to him it does look at times like he's recognising that and having to adjust. He was painfully short of options on a few occasions yesterday. Personally I think there's a solid if unspectacular keeper in there.

Hladky hasn't got better in my head. I was fully aware 12 months ago of his flaws - not the greatest shot stopper (but at least as good as Walton) and poor at command of his area. But I don't think many folk can attribute a "value" to the way he linked play up so well being a true sweeper keeper. If you see a keeper come out and collect a cross, as Palmer does, it is immediately noticed as stopping an opposition attack. The seamless, assured joining up of back passes to retention of possession and fluid transition into attacking movements was one of the absolute joys of our Championship promotion season. However, it doesn't seem to attract any meaningful stats in the same way that making a save of collecting a cross does. Hence I think people tend to focus on those metrics as showing Palmer being better than Hladky. Vac was undervalued greatly here, and we need to see him or another who can play with ball at feet like him asap. edit: or we need to change the way we play, i.e. hoof it up the field. But watching Palmer try to play tippy tappy is no easy watch. [Post edited 18 Aug 10:19]

Some of the nervousness in the crowd yesterday was like watching us back in L1 after McKenna joined. I thought we were past that.
GK position on 10:43 - Aug 18 with 1082 views | BseaBlue | Agreed. It was very noticable that he kept playing it to the wrong foot of the receiving player as well which was causing us issues. Then add in the fact that he does not look comfortable coming for crosses. Before the goal, there was another occasion when the ball came into the six yard box that he didnt come for.

I thought the nervousness was mainly a result of our home form this year as much as anything else. The combination of that and the annoyingly early kick off time didn't make for much of an atmosphere although people generally tried. As for Palmer, we can probably wait it out for this window but I'm with the jist of this thread that there are a few too many errors to be comfortable there.
