But laying the foundations and the concrete is probably the hardest and most time consuming part so may be fine once that’s finished and it’ll pop up quick.

| Pitch looks beautiful on 22:46 - Jul 3 with 2587 views | burnbudgiesburn | I just watched a 9 minute video of concrete being poured! Just up from watching paint dry I guess. I guess the new concourse & automated ticket turnstiles are the priority and the first few games may see no fanzone. As an aside, the Cobbold & Pioneer roofs really are showing their age now and really let the aesthetic down. I guess doing anything with the Cobbold is really not cost effective with the plan to replace it eventually. But I wonder what we'll do with the west stand if an extension doesn't actually happen, looks messy these days. | | | |
| Pitch looks beautiful on 23:10 - Jul 3 with 2425 views | grow_our_own | Has anyone "in the trade" spotted whether heavy piling has happened as part of these works? Ie bigger/deeper than would support a single-storey structure? If not, then extending the West stand and replacing its roof probably isn't imminent. | | | |

I think the plans said that a lot of the building is being pre-made offsite. I assume it will be delivered and just bolted together?

We have a Cobbold, a Pioneer and a West Stand? Joking of course, but after nearly 60 years of attending matches at Portman Road I still can't get used to the "new" names. I sit in Churchmans, facing the North Stand. Now which side of me is Pioneer and which side is Cobbold, and any tips for remembering which is which, just in case I have to have a sensible conversation with someone about ground developments. And no-one please refer to our lovely stadium as a bowl, like Ashton does.

Are you nautical at all? If so, the Pioneer will be on your left, i.e. to Port as you look out from Churchmans. Both begin with a 'P'. Don't make the mistake of thinking that because the Cobbolds liked a glass of Port that the Cobbold stand will also be to Port of you - it won't, it will be to Starboard. Right. Right? But the Cobbold stand is on Portman Road, which would only be to Port of you if you were in the North Stand, facing South. Port is also known as Larboard which starts with the same letter as Left. This is actually helpful. The Sir Bobby Robson stand is in the North. Boreal is another word for North, which starts with the letter B, as does Bobby. The Sir Alf Ramsey stand is in the South. Austral is another word for South, which starts with the letter A, as does Alf. So as you can see, there's some real alcohol-fuelled logic in the design of Portman Road, but as with all things nautical, this is far better comprehended when you've had a few glasses of starboard. Hope this helps.

I still think of them as Churchmans, Pioneer, North and Cobbold. Not that I’m a slow learner or anything.

Im with you on this, though I dont have too much of a problem with Pioneer as at the time they were our first big sponsor - and the stand was largely responsible for the subsequent dismantling of the team.

I'm slower than you. Still think of the North, West, East and Churchmans.

If you're not nautical, you could always use other reference points, similar to remembering which is the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand - that's the one with the Sir Bobby Robson Suite in it.... and the Sir Bobby Robson Stand is the one on Sir Alf Ramsey Way.
