| Ageism on 06:35 - Jul 25 with 4679 views | LegendofthePhoenix | This is just a part of societal ageism. My parents are now 89. They don't have smartphones. I've bought them mobile phones on 3 occasions over the past 10 years, the simplest ones I could find with big buttons, but they just can't get the hang of it. They lose the phone, lose the charger, even if they miraculously manage to get a charged phone, they can't remember how to use it and get lost in the technology of using a "menu". They just want a landline phone with numbers to press. The world just isn't catering at all for this generation. As they've got older and less mobile , they hardly ever get out now, so they rely almost entirely on the TV for their entertainment. I've set up NOW TV for them with the sports package, but even when Town matches are live, they can't navigate through the menus to find it, unless its on a main channel - red button or a subsidiary channel just means nothing to them. I live 170 miles away, so I can't just pop round to help, and they can't retain the information for the next time. It's really depressing to speak to them and hear that they yet again had to just listen to the radio commentary, when they have the package paid for to watch it live. The world just doesn't work for them - they're an anachronism. | |

On the other end of the spectrum my aged parents are addicted to theirs and massively lacking in the media literacy required to navigate the modern internet. My mother will spend hours scrolling junk. She was a writer who used to devour actual books and now it's just youtube slop. She also regularly purchases random diet supplements pushed on her by the algorithms which then need to be quietly binned. Rather wish they were offline (like my in-laws, who have a far healthier media intake).

I understand all of that, I am 81 fortunately in good health, had a successful career in finance reaching Director status but I certainly struggle with the new technology. In the eighties I put in the biggest financial system of its type but now I have the most basic mobile phone which I still have problems with. We have the Sky Q box but the new developments are beyond my comprehension. As far as a QR code thing I just will not venture, if I ever need to implement then I would get my sons or grandchildren to do it. Just recently my IPad went to private browsing mode just to get it back to normal took me a couple of days to fathom. Your comment about your parents not being able to remember the various processes is very relevant to us older generation. The pace of life and its ever changing ‘progress’ is a challenge, I have a reasonably modern car but the bulk of its facilities are beyond me. On my PC I can cope with emails and basic Word and Excel so I am not totally computer illiterate. My generation has seen tremendous changes, when I started work in 1961 everything in the accountancy section was manual, there was only one adding machine in the department and that was also manual. By the time I retired of course everything was computerised.

I disagree to an extent as it is not just about age but willingness to accept and adopt new technologies. My father is in his late 80s, has and uses a smart phone, a tablet and a laptop, remains very active in the community. My wife is very active in a number of local and national associations which by their nature have an older base, many of the ladies in these groups are in their 70s, 80s or even older. They meet in person but also have regular zoom calls to stay in touch, almost all of these ladies have learned to use technology to stay in touch with these groups virtually as well as in person. It is the same with anything, the less you choose to change and adopt the more isolated you risk becoming until it is too late to adopt, age is a factor, but so is money, education and support. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

| Season ticket holder for over 40 years to miss out because of technology on 08:07 - Jul 25 with 3945 views | SuffolkPunchFC | Point of order. It’s not being imposed by the club, but by the PL. We have no choice. It’s mandatory for most of the PL already, we just have an extra year to switch completely as we’re newly promoted. It’s also worth noting that NFC doesn’t have to involve a smartphone. There are alternatives such as wearables or an NFC chip in a credit card form factor. I don’t know if any clubs are going to offer the alternatives, but NFC does not equal smartphone only access. | | | |

I don't know for certain but it probably is just for this season. Thing is, I imagine that this is being replicated for loads of clubs. Being a moany old git who is technologically challenged, I'm fed up with having an app for everything I do. I'm off to Ascot today and my ticket is accessed through an app which somehow I've contrived to register my email address on twice so I can't get to them. Supposedly this is easier for me and is there anyone to phone ? Is there fu..............!

It's mainly aimed at parents and children but might be worth exploring as an option. I think there's a fine balance between things moving on and helping people who struggle with that. Hopefully the club find ways to support those who continue to find it difficult.

I have this one, my mother got into using a computer with Gmail. and Facebook to stay in contact with people. Nice for her. Then its turned into something of an addiction and Facebook with its literal fake news adverts and malvertising pushes norton antivirus subscriptions and various paid items or render a whole browser infected computer page. Amazon has been over used to order various supplimentary items for house and garden. And for mobile its lucky if its charged and we never moved to a smartphone. I used to enjoy the earlier smartphone era but as with most things in software design menus end up bloated and over complicated with options. Some people are more natural to all this than others.

| Season ticket holder for over 40 years to miss out because of technology on 08:59 - Jul 25 with 3500 views | BloomBlue | As you get older by default the world excludes you. Its happened for generations, it will continue to happen. I wonder what will happen to the gentleman who sits near me who has poor eyesight and is incapable of using a smart phone. But he loves attending the games for the atmosphere. But here is the truth, football clubs don't want you if you're not spending money in the ground. What's happening at Man U is coming to a football club near you soon. The PL want to push you down the Google / Apple router because they track all your activity - look at their T&C's. Now they dont track your precise card info, but pay via Google on 3 separate occasions at a match and they will have that high level info which they can sell back to the PL/clubs. Older people unfortunately have a tendency to just buy the season ticket and if they want a couple of beers before a game go to the pub, clubs don't want those supporters. They certainly don't want disabled people who cannot operate a smartphone, remember from next season its smartphone or you're not coming in. You need to understand we're owned by corporate America, embrace it, we're all making Trump happy. I was chatting about this to an Arsenal (they've used this for a couple of seasons) and he was telling me it was a nightmare that first few games. Fans trying to use wallet option, failing for lots of fans, everything from it not working as they had a phone cover, to NFC not enabled, to the wallet asking people to re-enter a password as it was the first usage. Apparently fans missed loads of the first half. But he was saying what annoyed a lot of arsenal fans, is the corporate executive boxes weren't forced to use the wallet only option. The club apparently said it was unfair to the corporates who own those boxes as they entertained different clients at each home game, and having different clients download cards to the smartphone for just the occasional game was unfair. Thats the point. Football clubs aren't interested in the fan who just goes and watches the game each week, you're not a cash cow. We're owned by corporates accept it. | | | |

Ultimately this is another step towards football being about customers and tourists rather than supporters. Season Ticket holders are a necessary nuisance in thr Premier League. For now. If the club falls on hard times, or (hopefully) the Premier League goes into "recession ", then suddenly Season Ticket holders will be important again. Until then our voices will be lost.

My mother, she died weeks before her 99th birthday, always took her Nintendo into hospital to stop her getting bored. My uncle lived in sheltered housing and was the complex’s representative. When they went digital sending out minutes etc by email he , at 85, purchased a laptop and had help in getting to use it. On the other hand I get annoyed with older people who take an age to pay using a mobile phone, especially those who don’t even take it out of their hand bag until they are asked for payment. Sister in law had a mobile phone but only switched it on when she wanted to ring someone.

Exactly this. We kept the club going but now they think they don't need us. When, inevitably, this unbelievable spell ends (and it will) they will need the core support to keep things going. Clubs should realise that.

I think this is reflected in the narrowing of the gap between the cost of a S/T, and the cost of a season's worth of individual match tickets. If the club *has* to have season tickets, they'd much rather they were priced at the equivalent of nineteen/twenty-three individual tickets. As others have said, the club absolutely won't care if there being no exceptions to digital ticketing forces some older fans not to come any more. They'll be able to re-sell that seat to someone who's not using the 65+ concession, and who'll spend money at the stadium on matchdays.

When I first had a season ticket if you missed two games a season there was no financial benefit in having a season ticket. Over the years it became more advantageous to be a season ticket holder. Currently, with a waiting list for season tickets, it makes sense to reduce the financial advantage of having one.

I’m of the opinion that these days STHs should pay a premium over casual fans, as they get a monopoly on the best seats, (usually) sit with their families and don’t have to face the scramble that non-STHs have to go though to get the few seats that are available each match. I understand my views are not widely held
