Which Town player from longest ago is still playing professionial footy? 19:40 - Sep 13 with 6900 viewsChocorange

Had some time and was looking up old ITFC players from ten plus years ago on Wiki, one of those i looked up was Sito Castro, who i am amazed signed for Logrones in Spain in 2018.

Sito played for us 59 times between 2005 and 2008. This got me wondering is there a player who played for us before 2005 who is still out there...and who would be the player that played for us longest ago, still with a professionial club?

Technically not as he’s still a free agent.

Yeah, although he’s currently without a club which makes me think it’s probably Matt Bloomfield (or possibly Dean Bowditch if he snuck his debut in first).

Both good shouts. I’d struggle to think of anyone from before who’s still at a pro club.

Bowditch's debut came in March 2003, Bloomfield's only appearance for Town was in the League Cup the following season.

Did we have any young keepers around that time? Maybe loanees? As they can play to a ripe old age.

I remember we had Begovic and McCarthy and Lewis Price was our own, but this would have to be before them even.

Price was April 2004 against Gillingham and he's only 33 now

Some gerkhas in Nepal have my Powergen Town shirt with Sito Castro on the back. I’m sure they’ll be thrilled to hear his career is still flourishing.

Darren Bent, November 2001.

Has Pablo retired? He played for us before Darren Bent in the 01-02 season.

Mark Burchill, who played for us on loan in 2000-01, only retired just over a year ago.

Richard Wright was a non-playing player for several years at Citeh, but has now retired.

My Soccerbase "research" shows that Andy Legg clocked up a 20 year career, impressive for an outfield player.

Dean Bowditch is currently on 15 years since pro debut, and is only 32.

Stolen.

He left ITFC in 2007, having played 68 games for us. He signed a new 2 year deal at Rotherham in the summer, having only played a further 79 in the eleven years since.

Back up keeper plays in cups and when required shocker.

I would imagine those stats are common for keepers who are paid to be second choice.

Of course, if the wages on the contract he has just signed are significantly higher than those paid to their first choice keeper, I can see your point.

Neil Midgley has appeared for Cambridge City this season. Not sure if that is as a professional but I suspect so.

Any player who is happy to go through virtually all their career knowing they’ll rarely play is conning a living.

Surely the ambition should be to play?

1st appearance made as a sub in a 3-1 win over WBA on 18th Dec 99. In which he scored. So that’s 19 seasons ago!

There's nothing to say he's not wanted to play more games over the years. Goalkeeper is a funny position, once it's been decided you aren't first choice it's very difficult to get yourself games (although Gerken recently has shown it is possible sometimes).

No point him turning down a contract at Rotherham to try and get first team football elsewhere and risk being a free agent for god knows how long.

My hobbies include being quiet during trips, clapping with songs, and diabetes.

The other part of the Lewis Price debate is that he’s crap.

I seem to recall him being decent enough for us. Or am I imagining that?

Thinking back my only real memory of him is taking a goal kick and it landing in the roof of the Cobbold Stand

I'll always remember Coventry away 2004/05 due to a train fiasco / when I walked in the ground.

Coming from Bristol, had to change at Birmingham New Street enroute to Coventry. Booked train, board, plenty of time ( so I thought )

Anyway, upon going to Birmingham.... my ticket said arrival time one time. I cannot remember when. Anyway, it was a disaster as about five people on the carriage had totally different times printed on their tickets!!!

The connection to Coventry was supposed to be 25 minutes - but no. Arrived in Birmingham and could see my train on the platform over to Coventry. I missed it...

So we waited for another..... got it. Arrived to Coventry around 2.45 or so. Frantically got a taxi, arrived in the ground maybe 15 minutes or so late.

Walked up to the stand - the first thing I see, us give away a penalty!!!

Saved by Price!!!

2 or 3 minutes later Bowditch absolutely smashed the bar from around 30 yards out, me and my mate decided it was a mental game! We won 2-1, due to perhaps the most bizarre own goal I've ever seen live.

God I miss Joe Royle days. Such fun.
