Has he done anything illegal?

His marriage had ended, so was / is he single?

Legal age of consent is now 16 isn't it?

Foolish, I guess so, but beyond that I don't approve but nor do I get the moral outrage. Private messages between 2 individuals not our business nor is disclosure in the public interest.

He has a partner so was being a bit naughty. It's still not illegal, though it does beg the question about when we deem an age gap to be too wide or the relative power of one individual over another. Bit of a chin-stroker. Maybe we should switch to the supermarkets' Challenge 25 protocol!

Foolish?

Gross misconted. Fired and loss of pension. Nothing less.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

A 42 year old man persuing a 16 year old is bludy grim at absolute best, regardless or legality. Would you be ok about this if it was your child? Of course its in the public interest - I woudn't want someone with that moral compass anywhere near power.

I think the fact the lad is / was a 'schoolboy' at the time is an issue.

I think its fair to expect the guy to resign.

I dont think his actions as an MP can be defended

Sending messages to a young person, even one above the age of consent is a foolish thing for a politician to do. Repeated messaging with no response is harassment.

He needs to resign as an MSP and will rightly face a police investigation as to whether there is a criminal case.

People often say things like "I dont understand the moral outrage here" on topics like these, especially ones of sexuality. This is I believe because we are living more and more in a post-moral age, meaning that morality has no place anymore in a world of science and reductionism where everything can and must be explained (or so many believe).

EDIT: I suppose I ought to say we have no idea if there were any ultimate sexual intentions behind the messages sent.

Maybe as he is in such a position as an elected representative he ought to show better leadership.

Said I don't approve and as someone who has been with their wife 20 years and never considered straying don't get that type of behaviour.

But does his pecadillo mean he'd be a poor leader of SNP?

Putting aside the moral aspect for a moment, in practical terms public revulsion would render him unelectable.

Perception, which is a slightly different thing.

That was one of the problems with Corbyn, there were things which people could get outraged about and his opponents use to attack him.
Johnson has similar, but insufficiently so to outweigh the factors in his favour (e.g. being a champion of Brexit).

It's totally immoral. The lad was 16. Think about that, 16! A kid, not an adult. So you have what is in effect the Scottish Chancellor, a man in his 40s, sending strange messages to a lad of 16.

He's totally unfit for public office. His reputation is quite rightly in the gutter.

If you're in certain positions of responsibility you can be done for engaging in or soliciting sexual relationships with people under 18. I don't know whether that would cover him though, it was designed mainly with people like teachers, youth workers etc. in mind. Given the level of authority invested in his role though I do wonder if he could be covered by that.
