By my calculations this is going to take 6 months to 'flush' through the system.

If the peak is in three months time, and it reduces back to the current level at the same time it takes to get to peak, then yes, it will easily be September until football can resume again.

No football until September per story in Independent on 22:41 - Mar 13 with 4307 views | Nthsuffolkblue | Speculation but feasible. If so, how does the season get resolved? 1 Call this the end and titles/promotion/relegation etc is all on where teams are. 2 Scrap it and call this season a non-event (got to feel for Liverpool and Sheffield United especially if so). 3 Finish this season when we would normally play from September and do something different for next season (e.g. only play each other once). 4 Other suggestions? The black hole in finances will be a big problem if there is that long without matches.

Finish the season now with effects goinf ahead but cancel the FA Cup so far. Best result for Norwich.

I think Norwich would rather they were not relegated. They would probably argue for having joint winners of the FA Cup too. I must admit I hadn't even thought about finishing off the cups as I had forgot they continued past the first few rounds. Maybe fits well with the idea of finishing this season when all is back to "normal" and then doing something a bit different.

No football until September per story in Independent on 23:01 - Mar 13 with 4238 views | LankHenners | Not hugely surprising unfortunately. You have the postponement until April, but then what? Coronavirus will still be around and it's not as if everyone's suddenly immune. Has to be a case of waiting it out until it disappears or a vaccine is developed, which won't be for several months. Assume the relevant bodies would then have to decide whether writing off this season as if it didn't happen or calling it as it is now is the best thing to do. Would surely be too much of a mess to restart it after such a break. But then you have the issue of is there pre-season training? If so, could be majorly disrupted if someone develops symptoms/tests positive. Teams then in no shape to start the season. Euros postponed to next year? But England hosting Women's Euros that summer so would have to forfeit hosting Men's matches. No solution to all this that is satisfactory to everyone.

Anyone know if football has been postponed because of players/club staff having symptoms, or worries over crowds at stadia, or a mixture of both?

The only feasible solution is to mark this year as incomplete, null and void, and start again when conditions allow. Remains to be seen how many clubs through the pyramid go to the wall as a result.

What's currently happening in China? With all this news about how the virus has impacted on Europe, there's little reported on China now. Has it settled down over there? That would be a good indicator. [Post edited 14 Mar 2020 8:38]

If they are to be believed new infections were down to single figures the last I heard on the radio or telly. Can’t remember which.

I think its because they felt they had to doooooo something, rather than based on any specific logic.

The Premier League said it was because of illness at several clubs. But there are almost certainly going to be legal reasons behind the statements they make. If they call it all off themselves they have a problem with tv money. If the Government calls it off permanently they possibly won't

Don’t think so. Too many clubs putting entire squads into isolation already, and EPL will know the lockdown is imminent in any case.

My local non league has just called everything off for one week. Baffling.

If this season's FA Cup is cancelled, Norwich will almost certainly put "winners 2020" on their honours board. At least, with the corona virus, the open top bus parade won't take place.

I believe had no PL club had any sign of the virus, there would be no cancellations.

If that hadn't happened, I think football fixtures may well have gone ahead this weekend, but the government is almost certain to ban "mass gatherings" next week. The only real debate is what figure constitutes a mass gathering. Scotland said 500.

Scotland said 500+ because if its 500+ you must have police and medical people in attendance (not sure how many) and those people have more important things to concentrate on at the moment. Scotland said cancelling was because of that and nothing to do with concerns of spreading the virus But some big events are going to get cancelled clearly not just football, ie the grand national, Glastonbury.

Are these rules about police & medical for gatherings over 500 purely part of Scottish law?

I don’t think Town tend to have police inside the stadium for most matches so I assume it must be part of Scottish law? Though obviously we still have police outside the ground.

There is no way they can stop the season and just say where the teams are in the table are the final poisitions. Take the prem - Bournemouth are effectively half a goal behind watford at a arbitrary point of the season having played different fixtures. That can’t be the basis of relegating Bournemouth - their lawyers would have the EPL bang to rights. Even those up the road will claim they *could* have survived and no-one can prove it even tho they have been the worst team to this point. They will have to do what Germany are proposing - invite clubs up for an enlarged premier league next year so Clubs like bournemouth And Leeds are not prejudiced against.
