Where are you exercising today guys? 08:35 - Apr 20 with 993 viewsbluelagos

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/coronavirus-guidance-on-access-to-green-space
See the above government advice. It is allowed and encouraged for your wellbeing - physical and mental to do some exercise. That includes outside the home and there is no time limit on how long the government recommends.

Inside or outside?
https://www.ramblers.org.uk/policy/england/health/mental-wellbeing-and-walking.a
"Being in nature or in green spaces is shown to have a positive impact on mental health through being closer to greenery and being in a natural environment."

When to go?
https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/observation/rainfall-radar#?map=Rain
Getting wet won't help your mood - so I use these guys. You can watch the live radar moving and make sure your time outside is dry.

You can even drive to a nice spot
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-52312560
Yep, the police are happy for your to drive a "reasonable" distance. So if you are stuck miles from a nice empty spaces you have the choice to drive to them.

So for those who are struggling with their mood at the moment (and who isn't?) I'd recommend you get outside for your exercise. Even if it's only in your garden. Get some fresh air on your face, in your lungs.

Some will be upset at the suggestion, but I'm happy to be guided by people such as the government, police and rambers who understand the benefits. Not looking for a row so won't be engaging in a debate.

And if you really feel the need to reply in a negative manner about my suggestion people get some fresh air, can I respectfully suggest you either place me on ignore or just complain to Phil who if he feels appropriate can am sure delete it.

Poll: This new lockdown poll - what you reckon?

Anecdotally there were far too many people about in London on the weekend and far too many people taking the new guidance to mean they could sit around in parks for as long as they like and chat in groups in the streets well within 2m of each other and blocking all the paths so nobody could get past within social distancing rules. I am not sure the "clarification" has been particularly helpful in urban environments.

I totally agree that people should get out to exercise when they can and within the social distancing guidelines but you often say you see nobody when you are out - this is a very rural-centric view of the current situation.

Enjoy your cycle, I suspect I won't get to do one for the next few days unfortunately.

You are good man Stokie. Very reasonable points.

Be a shame if you can't get outside though!

I see a fair few people. There was a bit of an argument in the local park on Saturday. 2 ladies shouting at 2 teenage lads who weren’t social distancing.

And a junkie walked by and was eyeing up Seb’s bike, stopped and made a call whilst his pit bull was running free. I moved along with Seb and the guy duly followed.

I’m going to go for a ride down to the beach and then along the Leas, either up to Souter Lighthouse or beyond to Roker.

The urban environment definitely throws up some challenges....have an argument with the Mrs Stokie, put your bike on a rack and pop up to ours for a break. All allowed!
Drove to a remote beach yesterday with Family Slave...one family group every quarter mile or so. Work for exercise today.

That's thing isn't it, guidelines that are suitable for the cities can be unsuitable for the country and vice-versa.

They key thing to remember though, and some people seem to get confused about this, is that exercise is good for you it is proximity that is the problem.

Well dont tell anyone but I went for a dawn amble around the edge of woods on the 'stricly private keep out' audley end estate. Its bluebell time as well as a good time to listen out for recent migrants in the still dawn air.... whitethroat and lesser whitethroat have arrived to join the swallows trying to find nesting material in the baked mud of sahara-like essex.

Think that's very fair observation and maybe explains some of the more extreme reactions to the idea of some of us exercising a fair old bit.

The lockdown was pulled together in a hurry and was never going to be easy. A distant cousin in France says she has a 2km zone she must stay within with a 135 Euro fine. 3rd offence is a prison sentence ffs.

I think ours is way way better.

Out of interest, what metric are you using to determine ours is way better?

I do agree it seems a better route to let people out if they are responsible but interested to see how you are quantifying it.

I think the fact that we are allowed more than 2km from our houses to exercise (Which would make for example cycling no more than an up and down the road if applied here) is way better.

And I think the idea of a jail sentence (Think she said it was upto 6 months) for exercising outside of the exercise rules isn't a punishment that I consider proportionate.

Fair enough and I do agree that for higher speed things like cycling, 2km is far too short. I also agree entirely that the punishment seems crazy but perhaps that is the only way the French thought their citizens would actually listen.

I was more thinking that if we end up having significantly more deaths than France will it be harder to justify our lighter lockdown as better?

All hypothetical of course and we are in agreement and to be fair I think the point about having different rules for different locations is a good one which hasn't been implemented anywhere as far as I know.

Working on a beautiful, big garden and vegetable patch near Thornham. Lovely weather, fresh air and good exercise. To be fair, myself and a few other posters on here are very fortunate to be able to mix business with pleasure, so feel very lucky at present.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

I went out at 7am and did 30km on the bike before work, absolutely glorious morning in West Suffolk.

Fortunately I decided to convert my garage to a gym in January, and cancel my membership as work wasn't allowing me to go enough to justify it. As we went into lock down I took the opportunity to buy a few more bits for it which I've now installed, and I did a bit of a paint job at the weekend so it's much more inviting (especially when sunny and I can open the windows and door. I spent a reasonable amount on the equipment but its only the equivalent of 7 months of my old gym membership so won't take long to pay back. I also save the 10 minutes drive time too and from the gym, as well as having some resale value on this kit if I ever decide to shift it.

I'm planning on getting in there for an hour when I finish work. Very easy to slip into an inactive routine WFH so fully second your sentiments about getting out, even just for a long and brisk walk.
