Lakers and Clippers now saying they’re done for the season. Would have more impact in non-COVID times but still a huge statement. Or at least more than meaningless hashtag and slogans

In response to a policeman shooting an unarmed black man 7 times in the back at point blank range. In front of his children.

NBA and MLB teams boycotting their games tonight on 09:18 - Aug 27 with 1650 views | WarkTheWarkITFC | I remember watching Kaepernick take a knee four years ago. Felt like a pivotal moment. Four years later Roger Goodell has said maybe they should have listened to him as Kaep misses out on $40m in earnings and has largely been vilified for having the audacity to think all people should be treated equally. I don't have any faith that the joke that is America sorts itself out. I can actually see it getting worse.

It never really felt that pivotal. Whilst it generated a lot of publicity and debate the kneeling was ultimately fairly toothless - games were still played and it was only really the NFL’s own image that took a hit Players/teams refusing to play is a completely different scenario and a very powerful one, that will ultimately hit powerful people where it hurts (ie. in both the wallet and court of public opinion). If this continues, it will have big repercussions in popular sports which involve huge bucks. Not really sure how anyone can resolve this situation though. It would be better if cops didn't keep shooting unarmed men, but reducing or preventing that would need years of training & education.

That is a good point. NFL is the biggest sport here. If that gets canned or affected that’s going to be huge

Sports entertainment is a privilege of having a functioning society unfortunately J2. COVID might put paid to NFL anyhow. Plenty of college football is canned already.

The FBS fallout is quite funny to watch at the moment, although I’m gutted it won’t be starting in earnest next week and will be a shell of itself when it does As for the current issues, SEC players/teams refusing to play would arguably be as powerful as the the NFL, given the pull that football has in those areas

College football is indeed powerful. Just a minor example but my wife went to a large Midwestern college that was traditionally an entirely dry campus... until their football team switched division to the SEC. One condition of the switch was that they allowed open container alcohol from that point on because the southerners love their tailgating! So overnight the booze did flow. Just because of game day.

I went to Maryland university once and was gobsmacked at the stadium. It's like Man Met having their own Council house or something. Crazy money and power over there. Likewise wrestling in Iowa and the mid west.

The largest college football stadium in the States is at the University of Michigan and seats 107,601 people. Every stadium in the top ten seats above 90,000. Portman Road is roughly the same size as the stadium that the Eastern Michigan University Eagles use... And who they hell are they? Barcelona have a smaller average attendance than the Arkansas Razorbacks. College football is in many ways bigger than NFL. Of course, this insane amount of money and power is built largely off the back of black students, who (other than possibly receiving a full scholarship) receive $0 of the billions that it rakes in.

Go Tigers! I just looked it up... I might have got a few details incorrect, but in general it seems the change was made because of the SEC and probably wouldn't have come about otherwise. https://www.stltoday.com/sports/college/mizzou/its-official-mizzou-will-sell-bee [Post edited 27 Aug 2020 14:46]

I went to Neyland Stadium to see the Vols a few years back. 102k capacity - for a while after I just used to smile whenever I was faced with someone waxing lyrical about touring the Nou Camp, or similar You’re spot on about the last point though (although that tide looks to be changing, at long last)

I guess when you consider a state like Arkansas, with a population of 3 million and no professional sports teams, it's not all that surprising that college football is so popular and important. It's the only sporting outlet. It really does make celebrities out of 19 year old kids though. I can't imagine going away to university, possibly away from home for the first time, and everyone knowing who I was, locally and nationally, and expecting certain things from me. It' must be like being a 16 year old PL footballer without the money or the circle of people to try and keep you on the straight and narrow.

Would it really need years of training and education? Of course there has got to be a change in mindset as much as anything. I really do not get how in the current climate you can still have an incident like the latest one. Surely every white police officer has to be more cautious knowing the current climate? How do you ever get to the point of shooting anyone 7 times in the back for reaching into their car while you are standing close enough to physically restrain them, black, white or whatever?
