Met police officer arrested in connection with missing Sarah Everard 00:35 - Mar 10 with 12387 viewshatch

Been following this closely since she went missing near Clapham last Wednesday. They’ve just announced they’ve arrested a Met police officer.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-56342465

And bizarrely at the same time I was messaging my friend to say ‘what sort of person would gain trust with a woman? A police officer possibly?’ and literally 10 seconds later we saw the news break on Twitter.

Such a worrying case and the outcome doesn’t look promising but at least an arrest has been made.

Yeah, that's horrible.

Every time I've heard her name mentioned I have tried to push the obvious from my mind and hoped against hope that she is safe and well.

That doesn't sound good at all.

I grew up on a road just off Poynders Road, literally yards from the area shown as the cordoned off section on the BBC website.

She was taking a fair old hike home on foot from the far side of Clapham Common to Brixton. Why didn't she take the tube?

Dunno. Avoiding public transport because of Covid maybe.

I could understand anyone doing that.

It'll all be part of the police investigation I'm sure.

May I refer you to the 'Reclaim the Night' movement.
http://www.reclaimthenight.co.uk/

"Reclaim the Night came to the UK over 40 years ago. In 1977 women in Leeds took to the streets to protest the police requesting women to stay at home after dark in response to the murders of 13 women by (recently deceased) Peter Sutcliffe. Placards read “No curfew on women — curfew on men”. It is hard to believe we are still marching, but we will not cease until we can walk the streets at night, without the fear of rape. Women still face widespread violence from day to day harrassment in the street to sexual assault, rape and murder. And yet we remain in a climate where this is still normalised as acceptable 'banter', where prosecutions for assaults are decreasing, and specialist services for women are under attack.

This march is a show of strength and a collective demand for freedom from sexual violence and harassment. Join us demanding justice for survivors and spread the message that no woman is ever to blame for male violence against her."

....not sure suggesting that women don't walk around at night is the way to go with this.

"They break our legs and tell us to be grateful when they offer us crutches."

I used to live a few streets from there and it's not that far a walk for a 30 year old (maybe half an hour - don't know where they got 50 mins from in the article).

I certainly wouldn't let my GF walk home at night that far though, around Clapham or Brixton.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Spot on Bankster. I was a bit taken back at the question and why anyone thinks it appropriate to ask.

What next, someone commenting on her choice of clothing?

It is victim blaming and completely uncalled for. It also demonstrates the unconscious sexism that permeats so many people's thinking.

Have said my piece and others will I am sure disagree, but I am with you on this.

This type of question has been asked too much as others have said. She’s fit and healthy and it’s not a long walk. She’s probably done it countless times (also the public transport links between the locations she was walking to and from are awful).

This isn’t about anything she did.

I suspect there will be a backlash to the police if this officer is found guilty - just to add to the existing anger from 2020. Racist rapists on placards.

I’ve lived smack bang in that area & it’s not that far to walk in the slightest. I’ve made that walk before loads of times & female friends have done it too.

Just before Christmas a girl I live with was mugged on her way home from work and the police's advice was to limit going out after dark if you're a woman. It probably would've been about six o'clock in December. That certainly doesn't sit right with me. Of course, everyone should be careful at night, no matter what their gender, but telling women it isn't safe to do so seems very backward.

A useful article of tips to men on how to make women feel safer at night:

https://www.stylist.co.uk/life/walk-like-a-woman-campaign-tips-for-men-make-wome

Some obvious but I think it's made me realise I should be more proactive when walking around alone at night to ensure women don't feel uncomfortable.

If we lived in a country when it gets dark at 9pm all year round then can understand it - but in the winter it is dark about 4pm and impossible to not go out after that, unless in London you live next to a tube stop.

Sad that these things still are considered

Yep exactly.

My wife (we live in London) doesn't go out running in the dark whereas I do - it's a massive issue that has numerous knock-on impacts Sad that it's the way it is.

Fear of crime is a problem when it stops you getting on with your life. And it is almost always way beyond the likelihood of anything happening.

See also old ladies being scared to walk alone when in reality the vast majority of muggings are done on young men. Same with parents not letting their kids play out, when I was a kid it was literally "Don't come back til it's dark" in the summers.

Not sure why people are so much more scared of crime than in years past, probably the way they are now more widely reported? But getting murdered/raped/abducted by a stranger is still a very rare event thankfully.

I guess I was thinking of the distance with the perspective of a small child growing up there.

The distance probably isn't that great for an adult.

But, even fifty-odd years ago, it's not a walk anybody would have wanted to do at that time of night.

And you are of course correct about 'reclaim the night'. Nobody should walk in fear at night. But we all have, always. Throughout history.

You'd have thought they'd learnt after last time.

That poor fella they harrassed. What case was that again?

Edit: Chris Jeffries and Jo Yates. But I'm certain there are more examples.

I think it has been a while since we've had a case like this in fairness but as someone that doesn't live too far away it has really shocked me, my partner and local friends.
