Been following this closely since she went missing near Clapham last Wednesday. They’ve just announced they’ve arrested a Met police officer.

And bizarrely at the same time I was messaging my friend to say ‘what sort of person would gain trust with a woman? A police officer possibly?’ and literally 10 seconds later we saw the news break on Twitter.

I used to live a few streets from there and it's not that far a walk for a 30 year old (maybe half an hour - don't know where they got 50 mins from in the article).
I certainly wouldn't let my GF walk home at night that far though, around Clapham or Brixton. |  |

This type of question has been asked too much as others have said. She’s fit and healthy and it’s not a long walk. She’s probably done it countless times (also the public transport links between the locations she was walking to and from are awful).
This isn’t about anything she did.
I suspect there will be a backlash to the police if this officer is found guilty - just to add to the existing anger from 2020. Racist rapists on placards. | | | |

If we lived in a country when it gets dark at 9pm all year round then can understand it - but in the winter it is dark about 4pm and impossible to not go out after that, unless in London you live next to a tube stop.

If we lived in a country when it gets dark at 9pm all year round then can understand it - but in the winter it is dark about 4pm and impossible to not go out after that, unless in London you live next to a tube stop.

Fear of crime is a problem when it stops you getting on with your life. And it is almost always way beyond the likelihood of anything happening.
See also old ladies being scared to walk alone when in reality the vast majority of muggings are done on young men. Same with parents not letting their kids play out, when I was a kid it was literally "Don't come back til it's dark" in the summers.
Not sure why people are so much more scared of crime than in years past, probably the way they are now more widely reported? But getting murdered/raped/abducted by a stranger is still a very rare event thankfully. [Post edited 10 Mar 2021 9:52]

I guess I was thinking of the distance with the perspective of a small child growing up there.
The distance probably isn't that great for an adult.
But, even fifty-odd years ago, it's not a walk anybody would have wanted to do at that time of night.
And you are of course correct about 'reclaim the night'. Nobody should walk in fear at night. But we all have, always. Throughout history. | |
