Serious question as it happens.

At what age did your body start to feel the wear and tear, does it get much worse and how do you help with this.

I've had a couple of years or so of getting a bit achy in the mornings I've come to the conclusion that I'm getting older. The easiest way to describe it is that I feel like I need a spray of WD40 in the mornings.

I was recently advised I have a lack of vitamin D so I am now on 50,000 MIUs a week.

Just wondered if there were any top tips and to whether it stabalises or gets worse and doesn't stop until you croak.

I think I’m about the same age as you (1962 vintage) and have noticed this year that my body isn’t what it used to be! Was rushed to hospital with internal bleeding, knees starting to hurt and now a really dickie shoulder that keeps me awake at night (rotator cuff I’m told - anyone know about treatment for this) can still run 5k in just over 30 mins but takes days to recover!

....the aches will get worse, then it'll be the eyesight, then the hearing.

Luckily you're already a slaphead, so you don't have t worry about that issue.

I started taking fish oil and turmeric about 6 months ago, I really didn't really notice much difference, but then I didn't take them for a couple of weeks and things went downhill pretty quickly. Worse aches, etc.

Seven Seas do the best deal on a combined Fish oil (inc cod liver oil) and tumeric pack.

I'm the same age as you and my body is pretty fcuked with regards to aches and pains. First thing in the morning is a bastard.

Doesn't help that I put myself through aprox 200k a month of running and or cycling. That said, I think if I didn't exercise regularly then I'd just get fat and old a lot more quickly.

It’s your basic fitness failing you. And what you once took for granted needs strengthening and conditioning.

Forget the hours of jogging that make many things worse, you can reverse much of that with resistance training for 10 minutes, 3 times a week.

I was 66 yesterday and had been slowly declining for 10 years (kidding myself I was too busy running my business) before doing something about it 3 years ago. I had minor back issues for years, including spasms and recurring sciatica, which I let stop me doing anything. I was persuaded to do some sessions with a personal trainer, who got me on weights for all the key muscles in the body and after a few sessions, I had more energy, no back problems, even got me back playing golf, which I'd given up on.

My eyesight for reading is now totally shot. That actually was/is the first thing to go. I've had back trouble since I was 21 so if that is declining, I've not attributed it to age.

Cod Liver Oil and Turmeric is something I definitely take. Ginseng as well as the usual multi vits.

......and now I've started to get a bit of tinnitus.

Currently not sure if it's just an ear wax issue or if I'm actually going deaf!

What a life.

It's age, simple as that. All you can do is manage it - try to stay reasonably fit by being active & try not to let your weight keep creeping up. A stretching routine each morning can help.

You're a bit older than me, I was 1965.

If you were "Around and about" back in the day I might know you as the lads I knocked about with back then were about your vintage - Falcon lot etc.

I did my rotator cuff in a few years back and after about 6 months they let me have a cortisone and that sorted it out in 5 minutes - but they make you go through all the soppy physio before they give it.

Oh yes - and tinnitus! So much part of life I forgot about it, but it’s always there. Thankfully not the whining high pitched stuff, but a constant hiss that’s getting worse.

I was a Bury boy so our paths wouldn’t have crossed. Hoping for an injection and not an op, but my lad who’s a Dr diagnosed it so I haven’t even been to the docs and got in the system yet. It’s a real pain because most of the time I forget it, until I put my arm somewhere it doesn’t want to go .... you know what it’s like!

This is true. I've been taking high strength cod liver oil for a year now and my joints feel so much better.

On your Sky telly box, there's now the Pelaton app, which I believe is free to all subscribers.

It's got some decent yoga and stretching videos within, which is all good for movement, flexibility and a much improved sex life.

Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.

Main thing I find is keep the joints moving and as light a body weight as you can manage, so that stress and strain is reduced on the knees. My knees were wrecked by playing up front when you could be kicked about the pitch and I've had cartilage and ligament ops on both knees. I was told 20 odd years ago my right knee needs replaced, but I keep as active and fit as possible. I am convinced this, and taking cod liver oil (as already suggested) and Glucosamine and Chondroitin (for my missing/damaged cartilage) and Tumeric also for joints - has meant I have not needed to get my knee done yet. Don't forget alcohol and the odd smoke, cant lose all the fun out of life.

I'm 62 now and feeling every year of it. Like others have said mornings are a right pain, no energy and everything aches. As I have copd breathing becomes a problem and some days I really struggle for breath. The inhalers I have don't seem to work as well now.
Also the waterworks have become unreliable, 1 minute you're fine then the next it's I gotta go NOW! sort of thing.
Had my eyes tested for 1st time in 5 years last week and they have actually improved a bit so no complaints there and I have no joint pain at all so if I had only given up the cigs years ago I'd be fine.

It gradually gets worse, everything starts to break-down but it will all go away once you crock it.

Seriously I actually found things don't necessarily break-down more they just take a flipping lot longer to heal. In my early 60s I did the nerves in one arm, it took probably 4 months for it to get back to normal, whereas if I had been in my early 20's it probably would have been 2 weeks at max.

I found exercise to be key in helping everything to keep moving and taking the dogs out every day for long walks helped greatly. Although I would add a lot of the oldies I know who have been exercising for years often had it worse, ie regular joggers having hip replacements on both hips in their early 60s. Also obviously what you eat/drink will impact you, but I don't believe in a 'one size fits all' when it comes to food and drink I think you have to try and understand what works for you.

My current GP is great, tells it how it is and often his answer is "it's you age you have to live with it". But he always makes a good point as we get older we never change things, the chair we sit it 'we never change it' the bed we sleep in 'we never change the mattress, we don't even turn it' . So the things we use are breaking down which often add to the problem ie waking up with a back pain caused by the mattress , a pain that will now take longer to go away because of our age.

Unfortunately ultimately the body does start to break-down as we get older, but I do feel you can help manage it
