Promotion is an absolute must. Not only do we have quantity, we have quality. Our squad is ridiculous. Anything less than promotion is failure.

Badged-up youth coach friend of mine was telling me recently that the current orthodoxy is that small groups were the ideal for an academy.

So why have we still got so many U21 professionals? Sunderland's Cat 1 academy has 24, the other Cat 2 academies in this league have 21 (Wednesday) and 11 (Crewe). They can't all be first team prospects, surely!

Did Cook or Ashton say we was going to have a smaller side this season? I can't remember it, and apologies if they did say that and I've missed it.

We certainly wanted rid of a few more of last seasons players, but we had no takers.

I guess time will tell if the squad is bloated or a perfect blend of strong competition at every position on the pitch.

Cook has talked a lot about how big the squad was.

When Cook came in he was very vocal about the number of players at the squad and how difficult it made things and how he favoured having a smaller core group of players. There's no doubt the squad has ridiculous quality for this level, the trick will be keeping the half dozen or more senior pros who aren't even on the bench happy.

Aluko for one, but who else? Barry? Surely after that, we're weakening the squad aren't we?

Our big squad will pay dividends during congested periods and also when clubs start to pick up more injuries as we move deeper into the season.

As previously mentioned, promotion is a must.

Yes, all we'd need is two or three injuries with a small squad, and we could go half a dozen games without winning. Oh. ;)

Promotion is indeed a must. In Cook and Ashton we trust. Cashton. Better than Chequebook, I suppose.

That squad number also includes Nolan and Jackson. There's 4 who'll spend most of the season outside the matchday 18.

A first team squad of 22 plus keepers doesn’t seem bloated to me.

Edit; beg pardon it’s 24 isn’t it. Does seem a bit, if not bloated, maybe middle age spread. Aluko and Carroll certainly seem surplus now.

Going through I wonder what everyone's expectations are/were for this season?

Walton - 1st choice
Hladky - 1st
Holy - Squad player

KVY - 1st
Donacien - Squad
Coulson - 1st
Penney - Squad
Edmundson - 1st
Burgess - 1st
Woolfenden - Squad
Nsiala - Squad

Harper - 1st
Evans - 1st
Carroll - Squad
Morsy - 1st
Nolan - Squad

Fraser - 1st
Chaplin - 1st
Edwards - 1st
Aluko - Squad
Burns - 1st
Celina - 1st
Barry - Squad

Bonne - 1st
Pigott - 1st
Norwood - Squad
Jackson - Squad

I make that 14 outfielders who would've expected to start most of the time, with 10 outfielders who'd at best expect to be fighting for a spot.

And despite it being pointed out to you, you ignore it.. we don't have a thrown together side as a third team between 1st team and u23s like we had to Last year. So it is exactly how PC wanted it to be. Smaller.

Never be afraid to share your thoughts.

Not sure I agree on Carroll, if he can get and stay fit and get a bit of a run I think he could end up being an automatic pick, he's a very talented player who should be far too good for this level.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Given that size of squad if we aren't promoted by Easter it will be a failure.

If we didn’t have those half a dozen available for selection they’re would be moaning that we didn’t have the strength in depth or the right investment. When we do get the inevitable injuries and suspensions we now have the strength in depth yet now the talk is, “how can he keep them happy”, “we have just as big a squad”…

Exactly what does it take to make people happy? There’s a lot of bored people on here gesticulating in their down time to try and second a guess how a season might pan out; why?
