Although if this is about basically annoying David Walliams then I’m all for it.

So we’re going to go through every work of literature to find examples of racism and editorialise them so that nobody gets upset? That seems dumb and not very progressive at all.

Are you the same bloke who didn't see any issues with portraying Jewish bankers as having hooked noses whilst playing up to racial stereotypes of Jews running the world?

Racial stereotypes are bad. Redacting or changing art seems dumb to me.

What’s next lads? on 13:52 - Oct 4 with 1258 views | mutters | Your comparison with Dickens is bonkers. Dickens was around early to mid 19th century where those types of stereotypes were part of the era. Walliams wrote these books 5 years or so ago and should have known better. He is living in much more enlightened times than Dickens.

I completely agree. Art is a product of its’ time and the artist (or in this case the person who puts their name to it) is too. But where does it end now? Do we say everything artistic past a certain watershed say within the last 5 years to use your example is fair game to be changed editorialised redacted and adjusted?

Correction: I didn’t have a problem with a cartoonish collection of famous rich old white men, a couple of whom were Jewish. You took that as a statement about Jews?! I bet you have a problem with people complaining about bankers too. Or at least would try to spin it into an accusation if there was a political gain.

At the very best Corbyn is blind to anti-Semitism, that's not an ideal position for a prospective Prime Minister, but he is quite prepared to indulge it in people he thinks are on the 'right side'. You defend some racial stereotypes but condemn others. Rank hypocrite.

It's not art, it's a kids' book. And it was written a few years ago, not when workhouses were all the rage.

That’s all correct. It seems mind numbingly bad, although given Walliams’ history with for eg black face not surprising. Lots of children’s books contain stereotypes of all kinds. The Tiger Who Came For Tea has a housewife and a dad who is at work while his family are at home. I’m not saying it’s the same exact thing and equivocating that with clumsy stupid racial stereotypes. But some people will think it is. Edit; it is art though. [Post edited 4 Oct 2021 14:25]

Don’t be silly. But a popular, modern children’s book still being reprinted? Yes, why not?

So popular is one of your criteria for scrutiny and change. How popular? How many should a book containing stereotypes be allowed to sell before it needs to be changed? Modern is another. How modern? Last 15 years? Last 20? Children’s book is another. Who decides if a book is exclusively for children or only partly? Do we establish a committee for deciding this? Or should we leave it to you?

5 years ago the use of racial stereotyping would have been as wrong as it would be today. Going back 150+ years is very different. In principle, I agree, you shouldn't go back and rewrite history as they reflect the time and also can be used to educate. However in this case we are talking 5 years and it's as wrong then as it is today. I Am amazed that it got through the publisher's review. Also Mr Walliams has form in this, especially with some of his Little Britain sketches, which both he and Matt Lucas have apologised for.
