So today is Sue Gray day then... by GlasgowBlue 31 Jan 2022 16:01Blackford is a fool, whose grandstanding completely took the momentum away from the pressure that was building on Johnson.
Contrast Blackford with the forensic filleting by Starmer and the cool and calm way T May reduced Johnson to a quivering wreck.

Everyone's done that outside the house and made the point many times, Blackford was just trying to create a viral clip and get Twitter likes. The fact he blusters every week makes his anger less effective.

No - it needs to be said *inside* the house to really make the point - ie to come out with what the majority of the rest of the country is thinking, and I don't just mean Scotland.

Out of interest, who does it make him less effective to? One could argue that when you have a blustering leader living by soundbites that soundbites are the best way to engage and persuade his support base. Not everyone is going to watch the debate. Now a debate could be had about whether it was the right time but I understand why he might have felt it was. Generally I'm not a fan of him though. SB [Post edited 31 Jan 2022 16:24]

On your first point, I concede that it probably only makes him less effective to the few hundred thousand people who watch PMQs rather than the millions who don't. It did come across as very self-centred though - he could've made the same point and worded it much more effectively in a way that didn't require Hoyle's attention

But no one has said that inside the house ! (do try to keep up) Thank god some someone has challenged this archaic nonsense. When evidence of lying has been shown, then it is nonsense to whinge and whine when it is stated in the House ps nice one Speaker - put down the idiot Tory MP
Arise Sir Keir on 16:36 - Jan 31 with 2167 views | Zx1988 | Irrespective of any potential issues with his previous conduct, I'm with Blackford on this one. The parliamentary rule that an MP cannot be accused of lying, despite the debate being upon the evidence of said MP's lies, makes an absolute mockery of the democratic system. If you've watched the footage of that particular part of the debate, you can see/hear from Hoyle's demeanor that he doesn't seem to agree with it either. More power to Blackford's elbow for calling Johnson out on the record for his lies, and having the backbone to refuse to withdraw his comments. F**k Johnson, f**k the Tories, and f**k anyone who defends this criminally incompetent/corrupt shower.

I'd have thought, but guess I must be wrong? that it's similar to the libel/slander laws - ie if what you've said about the other person is demonstrably true (in this case that Johnson's a liar), then you can't be prosecuted (or thrown out) for it 🤔 [Post edited 31 Jan 2022 16:43]

I'd argue, given that anything said in Parliament is privileged, the threshold would be even lower in the chamber. There have been a few cases recently where MPs have used this privilege to circumvent dodgy injunctions etc.,

Arise Sir Keir on 16:45 - Jan 31 with 2053 views | HARRY10 | Of course the Speaker recognises the sheer stupidity of not being able to repeated what has been shown in Parliament There is a Parliamentary privilege, where so much can be said without recourse to libel, or even evidence. This is a not a demand that accusations can be bandied about willy nilly, but stating the truth. Johnson has lied at the dispatch box in a regular basis. Yet when Blackford gave evidence that Johnson deliberately lied, it is not permitted to then refer to him as a liar

As a rule of thumb, you can always ignore what the Spectator (in particular) and the right-wing press as a whole have to say about the SNP. They’re just as smeary and loose with the facts as they are/were towards Corbyn. [Post edited 31 Jan 2022 17:26]

Another rule of thumb is if anyone credits Starmer with anything positive you’ll be along to discredit it quicker than you can reach a box of tissues whilst watching a compilation of Jezza’s best bits.

You just have to google Ian Blackford Charles Kennedy to find multiple articles from different publications on the issue. Shouting "smear" as a default can only get you so far.

Like I did on this thread, you mean? 😀 Anyway, now you’ve raised it ... why do I have to like Starmer and think his centre-right politics is appealing or right for the country? The Tories may be sh!tter but this is no real alternative direction for a country that badly needs it IMO. We need a bit more than a change of management.
