I accept the passing of the Queen is massive news 17:56 - Sep 10 with 2598 views | Trequartista | but does it have to obliterate all other news? Ukraine are making massive territorial gains today and barely a word. sky are saying Putin is "not expected" to attend the Queen's funeral. Not expected????? Its as though there is a chance he might as if royalty is more important that war. [Post edited 10 Sep 2022 17:56]

However, the degree to which it is being marginalised by this admittedly major item is poor. It would be very interesting if Putin did travel to this country (he won't). I assume he wouldn't because there is a high likelihood that he would be arrested to be tried for war crimes. That is what should happen were he to be brazen enough to attend, anyway.

I only got the news just from journalists tweeting, go to sky news front page and you have to scroll through 21 (twenty-one) stories (some repeated) before getting to any other news.

I was think Putun coming would be a nice chance to chat outside of a war situation, personally. I'd rather he came, although I can see why he wouldn't. Surely guarantees could be offered to his safety?

The same guarantees should be offered for his safety as Russia is offering for the citizens of Ukraine. The idea he would be welcomed, let alone not arrested is frankly abhorrent. That is aside from potential peace talks. They should be able to take place with some guarantees of the safety of all involved.

This is the beauty of our digital internet age. I am amazed by how many people still seem to use printed newspapers and TV/Radio News as their main sources of news.

Abhorant is a strong word, but fair enough. I'd just welcome a chance for personal, face to face contact between some of the leaders involved in the war. Its an unexpected opportunity which may some be useful in perhaps saving a few lives.

If you are talking peace talks, absolutely. If you are talking accepting him on an official visit as if there is nothing wrong, abhorrent is exactly the word. It would be akin, for me, to Hitler having been invited over for a chat with Churchill during WWII. Unless it was to broker peace, it would have been inconceivable ... as should the idea of Putin visiting.

I'm kind of suggesting talks taking place in a sad scenario which may help produce, or lead to peace talks really, but accept I maybe pushing pragmatism to an extreme. [Post edited 10 Sep 2022 18:34]

It's not so much that I can't find it if I try looking for it, which I did do, it's more that quite significant news is not getting through to the casual viewer of the main news sources BBC/ITV/SKY. [Post edited 10 Sep 2022 18:36]

How much territory should Ukraine give to achieve that peace and how long would it last before Putin wanted more? A fancy pen and treaty? How long has he respected one of those? That animal should stay exactly where it is.

There can be no peace talks with Putin. He is the invader and aggressor here. Ukraine will not and should not offer him the opportunity. He has no claim on their land, has called them Nazis and his troops have brutalised the population they occupy. If he ever comes out of his bunker, it should be either in a box or a one way ticket to the Hague.

With a huge number of Ukrainian nationals in the UK. It would be virtually impossible to guarantee his safety. Just one bullet would suffice. Not that there is any chance of that happening.

That's a good point and I do see why people would be so against hosting a mass murderer at such a big event. Also agree with the points above about what can peace talks ever do over the black and white question of territory seized. I actually managed to say a lot of the same things, in a recent thread about Corbyn suggesting the ending of arms supplies to Ukraine. Just wondering if him being there in the person might have helped — pie in the sky anyway, like you say.

I do wonder whether his actually decent and genuine sounding message to charles the other day, was just the hint of an olive branch if someone were to take it. Equally, as somsone on R4 was saying the other day, you have to analyse him as a gangster, not a world leader.

Talking of the Olympics, there was a wonderful interview with Seb Coe at about 4.50pm this afty on either R4 or R5l, on his memories of the Queen's significant contribution to London landing the 2012 bid; and her part in the James Bond stunt. Will look for link later.

I’d like to hear that. The year after 2012, I went to a presentation by the Project Manager for the staging of the Olympics/Paralympics (not the stadia building but the two year run in) which was fascinating. It did not include anything about the bid, but I do know she was well up for playing herself in the Opening Ceremony. A link would be appreciated!

Here you go - from 1hr45.25 to approx 1.56.30 - some of it I'd never heard before, & the ending was esp brilliant re Jack the caretaker & his baby oil polish lengthy convo with Her Maj. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001chb9 ((from 5 live sport).
