Almost 30 minutes in and his influence very limited. Is this because Argentina are simply not that good? He is undoubtedly one of the best ever and will likely score in this game but in the previous game and so far tonight he has looked well below his club standards.

Because he’s playing against proper opposition and not Spanish/French farmers.
Harsh but in Barca and PSG he has been plying for the dominant club in their respective league. However, he has always performed at champions League level too. Let's be clear though, I am not decrying his undoubted talent, just questioning why internationally he doesn't seem to have the same influence.

Because, while he has always been a wonderful player, he's never been a great one.

Mexico swarming him all the time makes it hard to get in the game.
Feel a bit sorry for him - very intricate and delicate with what he's doing on the ball then he gives it to some donkey who takes 3 of the heaviest touches you've ever seen and runs it into a defender or out of play.
Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Interesting to know that if Messi 'has never been a great player', who you think has?
Very few, in my book, because greatness has to mean something more than coasting along in the first class lounge of European club football and failing to turn up in five successive World Cups.
Pele, Maradona, Cruyff. Not many more. Harsh, perhaps, but greatness has to mean greatness, right?

Not a fan eh? He’s undeniably one of the greatest players to play the game. Whether he’s better than Maradona is another question of course. But he’s definitely a ‘great’ of the game.

Fair enough and I acknowledge that mine is a minority view, and I don't deny he's a fabulous player, but I'm honestly not trying to be edgy or controversial when I say that I don't think he's one of the greats. My definition of greatness is admittedly probably narrower than most. It's players who have reshaped and redefined the game, and I just don't think Messi has.
Just my opinion though, and probably not a popular one.
(Also, he's nowhere near Maradona - that's by the by, and I know wasn't your main point, but he's not even close. Maradona dragged a poor Argentina side to the World Cup in 1986 and nearly repeated the trick in 1990, and won two Serie A titles with Napoli, which is pretty much the equivalent of winning two Premier Leagues with pre-Saudi money Newcastle, or two La Ligas with Real Betis. That's greatness)

A decent hit from him there.
I do (reluctantly) agree that he is not as good as Maradona. Which is a shame as I like Messi and don't like Maradona.
Pronouns: He/Him/His.

Inevitable after this thread.
Ha ha, totally inevitable!!
Doesn't really change my view though. If he manages to drag this (not particularly great) Argentina side to win the tournament I may have to recant, but I doubt it.
Lovely goal though.

He’s dragged them to finals in WC and Copa before but he had Gonzalo Higuain missing sitters rather than Burrochaga and Valdano putting the chances away

Anybody else think it'd be worth Argentina winning just to know how much it would irk Ronaldo knowing Messi has a world Cup?
It would be fantastic.
But even better for those who think you can’t be the best player of all time without a World Cup. Which they are wrong about but at least it would settle them down.
