Team for tomorrow / Few random thoughts 13:15 - Jan 23 with 4044 views | Asa | Walton Clarke / Woolfenden / Burgess Burns / Morsy / Luongo / Davis Chaplin / Hirst / Broadhead Hladky, Donacien, Evans, Humphries, Harness, Aluko, Ladapo I don't think we have anything to lose by introducing all four of the January signings into the side at this point. There are very few players that have to be picked on current form and you could make an argument, with the squad we have and the poor run of results, for anyone being in or out of the side. Donacien (who is arguably my favourite player for a number of reasons) hasn't been at promotion winning levels for some time. Don't see any reason for Clarke not to be involved. Wolf and Burgess have been well off it, but Edmundson and Keogh look like they have even more mistakes in them off recent performances. I know the defence is a concern, especially the ease in which Hanlon and Wildschut scored, but we are still barely giving any chances away. Plymouth had nothing for 30 mins after we scored. It seems every shot goes in and there aren't even many when I'd say that Walton has to save them. He had no chance from Mumba, nothing he could do Saturday either. Yes, he's had a few nervy moments with the ball at his feet, but I still think he's been generally decent. Burns has been poor but has started to weigh in with goals again. Davis excellent but quieter against Plymouth and just had his worst game since the opening day. A couple of nice runs forward, but generally poor with his passing, left for dead a few times and positionally not as sound. Of course, as a scoring defender he's lazily been chucked in the team of the week! Morsy is one who is nailed on for me and Evans was my player of the season so far before he was injured, but has come back at Wycombe and coincided perfectly with this poor run of form. Happy to see Luongo come in and do that slightly different role behind Morsy. Evans and Humphries are both players who seem brilliantly suited to teams that give us time to play but that seems to have stopped of late. I see Luongo as being far better suited to help us dictate the game to start with, for the likes of Evans and Humphries to do their thing later on. Hirst did just about enough Saturday for me to stick with him. We need him up and running with goals. We know what Ladapo offers. Give Hirst a chance to get off and running as we need to take our chances and don't have the time for another Ladapo like period of not contributing goals from the off. Broadhead is a class player and streets above Harness. Harness had his worst Town game on Saturday, strangely after having his best against Oxford in the reverse fixture. He's exactly what Pompey said. Brilliant one week and anonymous for the next three. He's well below the likes of Chaplin and Aluko for me. Chaplin is having spells of being anonymous too, but he's always a goal threat so I'd have him in from the off as well. Most importantly we need to get back to playing our game. We have been figured out a bit now but we were earlier in the season and we stuck to our guns and outpassed teams and created loads. We now seem to have lost the confidence to do that and are playing far more pointless long balls even when we can see a Town shirt away from the fog. Tough time now for McKenna. First really sticky spell of form and he has to lift this lot now ahead of a big 8 games where we should be looking for at least 6 wins and a couple of draws, including needing to beat Wednesday. He's got to get the confidence back in the group and I am sure he can. Let's be honest, we are in a far better state now than when he took over and he immediately got us hard to score against and creating tons. Somehow he needs to find that magic right about now and, if he does, I see no reason why we can't go on another very good run and give ourselves a real chance. [Post edited 23 Jan 2023 13:32]

I wonder whether he might be offloaded to make way for someone like Sonny Bradley who isn’t getting regular game time at Luton

I think how often Edmundson has been left out already under McKenna this season and the fact that Keogh, a wonderful defender down the years but one who is now looking more Mark Fish than Tony Mowbray, is getting on the bench ahead of him, tells us a lot. Edmundson is behind Donacien and Clarke now on the right, it seems Woolfy and Keogh are ahead of him in the central role and we know that Edmundson makes errors on the left hand side where he looks completely awkward. He's gone from being arguably our best defender at a stage last season, to being one I wouldn't be surprised to see sold, especially as I can see us trying to upgrade on Burgess with a left sided ball playing defender.
Team for tomorrow / Few random thoughts on 13:28 - Jan 23 with 3900 views | WeirdFishes | Don’t disagree with anything you’ve said other than bringing in Edmundson for Burgess. Burgess is good 90% of the time but do think a fair few goals have been down to him. I also think Edmondson gives us more up the pitch too, he’s got a decent eye for a pass.

Absolutely. I can only base it on seeing how a fully fit Luongo played for QPR and Wednesday. Same caveat with everyone I think. But if Luongo is anywhere close to fully fit then I'd start him tomorrow and try and disrupt the way that teams are now setting up against us, whilst still having a player capable of playing the role if we dictate as we should.
Team for tomorrow / Few random thoughts on 13:33 - Jan 23 with 3780 views | LankHenners | Fridge for Burgess for me but otherwise I'd go with that. Think some of the praise for Evans has been a bit OTT all season but he's certainly not been at the same levels as he was pre-injury and if we want Luongo to play a part this season he needs match minutes and tomorrow's a good opportunity for some.

I’d be playing Humphries ahead of Luongo.

I'd be happy with that tbh, gives us a bit of drive and forward momentum. Temporarily forgot about the FA Cup game on Saturday as well so assume Luongo will get a decent run-out then anyway.

Now I know we are blasé about signing injured players, but one with a broken leg is surely a risk too far

I have a very strong suspicion we are in for Bradley as we speak. We wanted him two years ago. Edit; turns out he’s injured!! [Post edited 23 Jan 2023 14:54]

I understand possibly Luongo for Evans but think the Morsy and Evans partnership works. I suspect that, if he were to go with that team, McKenna would put Jackson on the bench ahead of one of the defenders.

Team for tomorrow / Few random thoughts on 21:34 - Jan 23 with 2955 views | TalkingBlues | One change for me, I’d start Humphrey’s instead of Luongo, Humph is the best attacking midfielder we’ve got IMO and can make a defence splitting pass too, we need to win, we’re at home, so let’s fooking attack from minute 1 and really give them a good tonking!!!! I did put Ladapo ahead of Hirst before; would be interested to see him in a front three.

Team for tomorrow / Few random thoughts on 22:47 - Jan 23 with 2784 views | BondiBlue | I know what you mean about chaplin, streaky but our biggest threat when he's on form. I'd like to see aluko start somehow though, either instead of chaplin or harness. We're lacking confidence and composure and he brings both. I thought donacien was good at oxford so i'd keep him in. Edmundson is slightly better with someone running at him than burgess but otherwise burgess is better in every department. Woolfenden is now undroppable given our style. And humphreys instead of luongo. If humphreys isn't at least 3rd choice by now, i've been watching a different sport.

Woolfenden has only missed one league game under McKenna where he's been available. That was against Morecambe. The way Phil's preview was written makes me think Edmundson will come in for Woolfenden. Will see it as slightly harsh as I think Saturday was the first obvious error he's made in a while, compared to Burgess, who had a hand in both Oxford goals and McKenna seemed to call him out for getting his angles wrong when deflecting Plymouth's equaliser into the goal.

I can't see that. I'd go: -----------------Walton Clarke - Woolf - Edmundson - Davis ------------------------Morsy ------------Humphreys ------Burns - Chaplin - Broadhead -------------------Hirst I think if Evans gets a rest, you've git to put Humpy back in. He's got that youthful spark can make something out of nothing. Presumably both fullbacks will be pushing on a lot, but with Broadhead more inside than Burns. Be interesting to see to see how a Clarke/Burns partnership develops, but I don't rule out JD coming back strong in that role. Bench: Hladky, Leigh, Donacien, Evans, Harness, Aluko, Ladapo
