Where the locals ask for cobs or barm cakes instead of bread rolls. Especially if they eat them with chips, the rather wonderful chip butty.

I always called them baps, probably influenced by my Scottish parents, as according to the following (which includes maps showing where the various terms for a roll are used) it is only used by 6% of the English population.

I'm Northern monkey born ..Manchester and dad was born in Stoke and I spent a lot of time there with grandparents and such so was very entrenched in Midlands lore ..oatcakes and such...but STILL felt it was the North.

Remember a few cheekily named bakeries oops north (nice baps)

Tea cake gets a fair score too according to that survey.

But for me I'd say Stoke and Derby are Midlands, Sheffield and Manchester are the north

There are probably some lands in the middle that separate them. I don’t know what they’re called though.

Lots of regional variations in beer brands too. If people are drinking Mild you're likely in the midland, draught beer up north, lager dan saarf.

Course lots fall outside that, but defo a regional inbalance. And same for the brands. Tetley (West Yorks) Stones (S.Yorks) Vaux or Newcastle Brown (NE) Boddingtons or Hydes (Manchester) Brew x1 or Banks (Midlands) etc.

The locals have always been feircely loyal to what are seen as local brands with some breweries even branding the exact same product differently across borders (Tenants and Carling)...just dont tell anyone :-)

*All my knowledge is around 25 years out of date given that's when I last worked for a UK based brewer.
