Early 80s were great. Mid 80s awful. Decade finished in style with 1989 release of The Stone Roses’ debut album.

slight edit to your post Illy.
I do remember being 15- 16ish around the later mid 80s and being embarrased by Stock,Aitken and Waterman and jive bunny and jealous of all other eras and I guess I was their target demo ... Probably why i got into good "older" music slightly earlier in age than normal.
Early 80s in particular were excellent. Artists like Police, Dire Straits, Springsteen, Prince, Madonna, Michael Jackson - there was variety and a lot of good stuff out there.

If you actually listen to the bassline that Nick Beggs plays in that song, it's probably one of the most virtuoso pieces of music in songs of that era...
You are the obsolete SRN4 to my Fairey Rotodyne....

I would always defend SAW as they were honest about producing pop, on a Motown template, and they were actually independent, which used to pee off the ‘Indie’ types! Power ballads were the budgie cage lining of the decade.

Saw him perform it on Howard Jones' acoustic tour last year with Robin Boult. Good stuff.

Pop music in the 80s was awful. It was full of annoying, repetitive synth crap. Don’t just take my word for it - it’s been scientifically proven! https://uproxx.com/music/80s-music-is-the-worst/

Whilst p!ssed in the pub one evening about 25 years ago, a mate confessed to a group of us that the first record he bought was Tight Fit's The Lion Sleeps Tonight. He's still occasionally reminded of this, even today.

Never be embarrassed by your first purchase. Unless he was older than 6 at the time that was number 1! Mine was Edison Lighthouse, still love that song today!
