When something doesn't feel right 17:14 - Mar 3 with 1838 viewsstickymockwell

Do you always trust your gut feeling?
I think someone who I'm very close with is telling me a huge lie. I've asked them outright, and they've denied my accusation, but I'm just not sure! I have no proof.
There's too many little things that have happened to be a coincidence, I think.
So do you always trust your gut feeling?

I think it can be a good guide, as it's the resulting feeling from all the little bits of information you've picked up which don't seem right when put together. However, this will largely be based on one's previous experiences and references, put into the personal context of one's own perspective of situations, the self, and others, so it doesn't automatically provide you with the correct answer and shouldn't be 100% trusted in and of itself.

That’s a tough one. Sounds like you’ve already made one big step by asking outright. But yes, I’d normally trust my gut feeling. Where you go after a (possible) denial is another matter. Without prying, it may sound like something that needs proper advice (if it’s damaging, such as addiction as Noggers asks or relationships or finances, for example).

No!
I know a few people on here, so I can't really say, but it will definitely end our friendship. I just don't want to be a paranoid div, but equally, if I'm right, then I've been done for a fool so badly.

I don't think you can ALWAYS trust your gut, but I think it gets more things right than wrong.

Perhaps you need to take a step back and evaluate it from a more rational and detached point of view, and if possible, talk to someone you trust about it. There may be things that you are overthinking because you are close to it, likewise, there could be things you are overlooking.

Finally, once you have reflected on your own thoughts, what they said and possibly any external advice, I would talk to them about your concerns and doubts again. It's understandable to be upset by something like this, but try to remain calm during this process as you are unlikely to get the truth if you approach it with hostility.

Wishing you well, not an easy thing to wrestle with.

Suppose a lot depends on how important it is. If it's someone cheating, you want to know for sure.

If it's someone who's just a serial bullsh1tter/fantasist how much does it matter?

I reread an old thread the other day where someone was on here was shown up for making up cr*p, pretending to be a doing a volunteer job which was basically complete bull. I pointed out at the time to tread carefully, sharing the story of a fantasist who claimed to be at Hillsborough and to have been a hero carrying injured fans etc.

When he was later exposed, he topped himself sadly. My point being to tread carefully, even if you are convinced someone is full of it, how much does it matter? There may be other stuff going on that you have no knowledge of..

Trust your gut feeling, I find it's usually right, but you can never be 100% sure about anything.

People who start with little lies end up telling bigger and bigger lies as their little lies unravel, and relationships are destroyed because people can't say early enough, "I'm sorry, the first thing I said wasn't true, I should have been open and honest with you at the start".

Gut feelings are sometimes true, but it is also very easy to add two plus two and make five, it is very easy to over think things, don't push things until you have the facts to back up your feelings. Sorry that is not a great help, but stay strong and take things slowly and carefully.

As others have said, not to the exclusion of absolutely everything else, but I certainly take them into careful consideration every time, and if things are finely balanced with them potentially being the deciding factor, I’d go with them.

We’re given instincts for a reason as mammals - something people often forget.

Given the limited information by the OP, what on earth made you jump to that conclusion?
