Ah, what friends Rishi now has 13:26 - Mar 9 with 1406 views | ElderGrizzly | From the Guardian: Éric Zemmour, the French far-right commentator, supporter of the “great replacement” theory that Muslim immigrants are replacing native Europeans and candidate for president in last year’s election (he came fourth), has also praised Rishi Sunak’s new asylum policy Italy's far-right Deputy PM has also praised his plan today on social media.

Ah, what friends Rishi now has on 13:45 - Mar 9 with 1301 views | DJR | Here's another friend. Italy’s deputy prime minister, Matteo Salvini, has praised Rishi Sunak’s anti-immigration measures as “harsh but fair”. In a post on Instagram, Salvini, leader of the far-right League, quoted a tweet by Sunak, translated into Italian, in which Sunak said: “If you arrive illegally in the UK, you can’t claim asylum; you can’t benefit from our modern slavery protections; you can’t make spurious human rights claims; you can’t stay”. Beneath the post, Salvini wrote: Words from the UK prime minister. Harsh but fair. [Post edited 9 Mar 2023 13:46]

My parents, and one set of grandparents were amongst those who were readily granted refugee status then, & of course we all had/have lifelong gratitude for that. My Dad started his own business from nothing, it was eventually successful, & both my parents became unswerving Tory voters. Absolutely certain that if they were still alive they'd be horrified at what the tories have become now, and would be switching their votes to LD. Pre-2012, that would have been unthinkable for them.

There's really no room in the party for decent people anymore (Dominic Grieve, Rory Stewart), and any who are keep their heads down, terrified of the reaction of those who vote for them. I've yet to hear any Tory condemn what the government has announced, but surely, for example, Theresa May, the architect of the modern slavery legislation, must be appalled at what is going on? The vote on second reading of the Bill next week will be interesting because we will find out if any Tories have any principles. Clearly the MP, whose footage you posted, doesn't have any. Considering May was the creator of the UK being a hostile place I don’t think she’ll be that bothered. As Home Secretary she wasn’t that welcoming and her Brexit rhetoric was equally as hostile. [Post edited 9 Mar 2023 15:39]

On reflection, I was wrong to even mention her. The Windrush scandal, in particular, a result of the hostile environment, was a disgrace. I speak as someone born in a Commonwealth country who came to this country in 1960 but had my status as a British citizen confirmed around 1970 when it was easy to do so. Many other people, with the passage of time, were not so fortunate. [Post edited 9 Mar 2023 15:34]

Paywall, but was Corbyn's manifesto really "hard left"? Several of the economic policies reflected what you'd see in coalition governments or centre left governments in European countries. Presumably this is just Telegraph talk?

Oh yes, it was not hard left at all, but that was the message conveyed about the Corbyn manifesto even by those not of the right. I think the point I was trying to make is that those on the right of the Tory aren't happy with how right wing the country is economically, despite 13 years of a pretty right wing government.

Yeah, that's not really going to work as deterrent for traffickers, is it?

Traffickers are wealth creators aren't they? - they make shed loads from it and avoid paying taxes on that income. They've seen an opportunity and are exploiting it. If their actions cause problems for others then that's the others problem not theirs. The Traffickers are true Tories.

And I don't suppose there will be many (if any) people contemplating the crossing who are even aware of what Braverman is doing. Even if they are, and they dig a little further, they will realise nothing the government has done to date has actually worked. [Post edited 9 Mar 2023 17:38]

Compared to the current lot Grieve and Stewart (and as others suggest Ken Clarke) do seem 'decent' but their voting record while in government doesn't quite convince me. They might do politics in a more polite and civilised way than 30p Lee and other shouty red wallers or blustering backwoods men, but then so does Michael Gove.

Lest we forget, Ken Clarke is at the root of a lot of deep rooted problems and unnecessary NHS costs with his introduction off Efficient Private Sector involvement. [Post edited 10 Mar 2023 0:32]

Ah, what friends Rishi now has on 18:02 - Mar 9 with 729 views | HARRY10 | So would this latter day Pierre Laval be willing to allow those boat people to be returned to France as the more moderate French politicians (so far), will not ? There is a wonderful Monty Python sketch where a man claims to have written all the works of Shakespeare. When asked how that could be as he was only 37, he replies "I was rather hoping you wouldn't ask that. Which neatly encapsulate the right on so much. Simple answers for extremely simple folk. Since brexit the UK does NOT have any agreement with any EU country to accept returning migrants - hence the idea of deporting them to Rwanda This is the reason so many are stuck here. 21 returned in 2022, I believe. Once Brexit was brought in it was open season Brexit - letting them in as never before
