Maybe he thinks it was too lenient? Have to say, I was thinking he would get a whole life sentence. Only the fact he didnt "plan" to kill the child prevented him getting that according to the judge.

“There’s a strong message, if those individuals who at the weekend are partying out in clubs or socialising in houses think they’re not doing any harm by having a line of cocaine or doing whatever they want to do … Everyone involved in the chain is responsible.

Maybe I’m tarring all with the same brush but I’d say the majority of those who take cocaine are more likely to sway right politically.

If they didn’t take cocaine the business wouldn’t be there. If this results in people stepping away from it then all the better, and starving these evil gangs of income.

None of this will bring Olivia back, however. The poor family.

Not sure politics affects it as much as income (although higher income often is associated with more right-wing support economically).

The nature of addiction, drug use and culture means I think your hope is very optimistic.

Much could be said about driving a car, using a shotgun or drinking alcohol.

This is a person with a criminal mind. Plenty of people involved in selling drugs who do not carry guns.

The sentence more reflects public outrage than necessarily the crime. That does not mean the sentence is not wholly justified. He set out that night to kill. What would the sentence have been had killed the man he was chasing ? 42 years ?

As long as there are huge sums of money to be made from drugs such as cannabis then this will be the inevitable consequence. Remember the criminality during the Prohibition.

Time for what is called 'a grown up conversation'. Not law by ill-informed bigots.

The answer to violence associated with criminal activity is to legalise drugs? All drugs? Do you think there might be other criminal activities that those who want to make money will engage in instead?

It’s a shame the sentences are to be served concurrently. In my world that POS would serve them one after the other.

That thing has destroyed more than one life and should never be released. Ever.

You take a life, you’d better have a good reason to do so otherwise for me it’s jail, paid for by you or you relations, until you are carried out in a bag.

Good reasons might include self defence, police, military.

I don’t know why he was chasing that man and I’ve of course not seen the evidence. The BBC says he was another drug dealer. If so, the intended victim would be serving a very long sentence for that. I hate what drugs do and the gradual acceptance of them in this country, but these are separate discussions.

The POS in question used a firearm and killed. He knew what a gun was and what it could do. He chose to use it and is accountable. Life lost, lives changed for ever. If he can reverse that I’d consider parole in say 42 years time. If not, he stays inside until his last breath.

Liverpool's underworld turned him in almost immediately. There's also credible evidence of a price on his head, hence why he was surrounded by armed guards today perhaps.

I suspect he will be kept away from the general population and on suicide watch for a long time yet.

The refusal to leave his cell should carry some sort of sanction. I saw someone suggest the sentence doesn't start until you are given it by the judge in person. Sounds like a good idea on the face of it, but someone like him has nothing to lose anyway as it's unlikely he'll see out that term.
