8 consecutive clean sheets in the league 08:54 - Apr 3 with 3352 viewsChrisd

Has that feel like the end of last season when we were so defensively tight, when we concede it will be a real surprise. Well done to KM, his staff and the players for turning this around. It’s a very impressive stat, regardless of the level of football. Any team would be proud of that record.

KMc and the players are displaying a strong mental strength. Usually when a team goes on a run there are signs of weakness, performance drops and it is a relief when the run ends. Absolutely no visible signs of that happening.

KMc will presumably be Manager of the month for March, and hopefully April too.

we've definitely benefited from teams not scoring with one of their few half chances as well.

We are defending better generally as well.

Think the big test will be when we go a goal down now, can we turn that around to win a game like that.

We've been consistently good defensively really. In the league under McKenna:

61 games, 43 goals conceded, 31 clean sheets.

That's quite remarkable. And 4 of those were conceded in one freak game vs Charlton.

Think I'm right in saying that's the only time we've conceded more than 2 goals in a game during his whole tenure? Pretty remarkable. A lot of it is down to how dominant we are in games, we are insanely good at winning the ball back and stopping teams even getting near our box but we also have very good defensive shape and there's no better sweeper than Woolfenden at this level, imo. Add in having a top keeper for this level and you have a pretty formidable unit. That we gave up very few chances to a rampant Burnley side over 180 minutes shows how good we are as a defensive unit.

One thing we can work on — and this is being picky but you can bet your bottom dollar McKenna will be across this — is how we handle those minutes after half-time when a home team comes at us. Walton saved us vs Bolton and an iffy decision did on Saturday (there was stuff going on in the box but usually that gets given imo). Can definitely improve on those moments of sloppiness. And I'm not detracting from our really phenomenal recent record, just pointing out there's always room to grow.

Yeah, and McKenna's made that point as well - we're not really conceding any fewer chances than we were earlier in the season but they're just not being converted into goals. The days of shots pinging off a defender and flying into the top corner seem to be behind us as well.

Will be interesting in that scenario - if we go ahead in a game I feel very confident we'll win as we have the quality to pick the opposition off when they have to push to get a goal themselves. Think we're better equipped now to deal with it though if it happens, if a team tries to sit back and protect a lead we'll overwhelm them so much and have more quality finishers like Hirst and Broadhead that (hopefully) we won't have games like Lincoln or Cheltenham at home.

I'm sure they'll look back on it as a job very well done but it's good that neither the manager nor the players seem to care much about these clean sheet records etc., bodes well for their ability to deal with any setbacks to come.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

This time last year it felt like we just passed teams to death, and the likelihood of them having enough of the ball to score a goal was slim.

While we can obviously still pass the ball around for fun, there's more to our game e.g counter attacking, so it feels even more impressive that we're so solid. No idea if possession stats back that up - probably not.

Dunno about league one in particular but for te EFL there are currently three teams who hav e got to 11 successive clean sheets

Millwall - 1925/26
York City - 1973/74
Reading - 1978/79*

But in Elnglish football as a whole Manchester United top the lot with a run of 14 games in 2008/2009

*I'm actually surprised that Reading don't sing about this along with 'we got the record 106' given that for their success starved fans that is at least something.

So if we don't concede until Fleetwood, we'd beat the ManU record. It's doable ...

Think a big difference this time round is that we are making more of the "moments" in oppo box. And we have a massive set piece threat.
Last year, in games where we found it hard to break teams down. We kept clean sheets, but were screaming for a few set piece goals. That box is ticked now.And it's been the difference in quite a few games. Not necessarily winning goals. But just goals that have given us a lift to kick on. Or force defensive sides to come out more to try and get something from the game...
You gotta hand it to KM..Pretty much all the shortcomings from last season, have been addressed. Either on the training pitch, or in the transfer windows..
Still think he had the rug pulled out from under him, with all our MF injuries mid season. Otherwise we'd have a few more points on the board, imo..

Think it's a bit like when we do a goal but it's when someone does a goal in our goal. I think so anyway.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence this has occurred largely since Luongo has come into the side.

The defenders deserve HUGE credit, but Luongo has added some steel in midfield and helped to break things up before they become a chance.

I’ll hold my hands up and say I didn’t really rate or trust Burgess, but he’s been a rock lately (and the icing on the cake was his bullet header against Bolton).
