Ball or Humphreys 23:36 - May 9 with 2413 views | FrimleyBlue | Who you picking out of the two..? For me. Ball... better in the battle. But not great control. Runs into trouble and doesn't seem to be able gain a yard of space but he tries to keep it simple which can be a positive but overall imo slows play down. Humphreys.. lots to learn when players run at him, still quite lightweight and needs more experience.. however much better with the ball, can spread play well and can help to increase the tempo. I know it's difficult to nurture players and yes we do have a couple of town academy lads in the side already and I don't see Humphreys being first choice. But if you had to choose would it be Ball or Humphreys as the back up CM.

Ball or Humphreys on 00:06 - May 10 with 2330 views | catch74 | You’d imagine he’ll be off out on loan for his development. If he stays I assume he still doesn’t count towards squad numbers due to his age. KM clearly chose Ball over Humphreys, as soon as he was fit again, that experience and extra muscle. I’m happy to go with Mckenna. As for next season - Ball has Chmapinship experience - Humphreys is only going to get better.

Ball or Humphreys on 00:27 - May 10 with 2301 views | Vegtablue | Without wishing to hide from your question Frimley, I believe it to be a very, very hypothetical one! I strongly suspect McKenna envisages neither as primary backup in our CM positions next season. Pan may materialize into a new Championship signing, as far away as that feels presently. Our ability to offload CMs and sign Taylor may impact Luongo's signature, as much as I'm an enormous fan of the dude. I don't see this failing to happen unless he becomes fourth choice in our manager's eyes, though, which would require two fresh faces and a fully firing Pan. TLDR: Ball.
Ball or Humphreys on 07:25 - May 10 with 2094 views | Dubtractor | To be honest, the jury is still very much out on Ball for me. I'm not sure what he excels at. So Humphreys gets my vote in this hypothetical scenario.

Ball or Humphreys on 07:36 - May 10 with 2044 views | RobTheMonk | Ball mainly for the experience and he was a regular Championship player. He got injured before he ever got going for us. Hopefully a pre season gets him up to speed. I think Humphreys would massively benefit from a loan in League 1 to someone like Northampton or Oxford.
Ball or Humphreys on 07:40 - May 10 with 2038 views | Herbivore | Ball is a good bench option because he can also cover CB. That said, he's not a game changer off the bench so that's a drawback. Humphreys is capable of producing moments that can change games, whether that's picking a pass to create a chance or attack, or getting on the end of something himself. I think it's likely Humphreys gets a season on loan in League 1 to continue his development as we also have Camara and Evans ahead of him when fit, plus I can see us signing a new CM in the summer. Ball will be a solid squad option but won't play much.

Agreed - I know we’ve not seen a huge amount of game time from Ball, but I just haven’t seen anything beyond ‘does a job’. My perception is his passing and control seems fairly limited which limits his impact. He really seems a long way off Morsy and Luongos contribution. I’d be interested to see his pass completion rate as I may be totally wrong. That said, he’s certainly a better back up than Bakinson was last year. Personally I think we need (and will) look for a higher calibre CM in the summer and he will be at best 4th choice in CM. I think Humphrey’s offers a lot more, and has a very bright future. Be surprised if he doesn’t go out on loan for the year though. [Post edited 10 May 2023 7:51]

This is where I'm at, I was hoping he'd shine at Fleetwood but he was a bit of a disappointment. Didn't do anything obviously wrong but doesn't drive the team forward like Luongo or Morsy. That said, he's been injured for ages and has had barely any game time so bit hard to judge really. A good bench option as you say. Also, agree that we'll be looking for at least one centre mid. Luongo and Morsy are both on the wrong side of 30. I imagine both Humphreys and El Miz will go on loan to League One for a season and we'll bring in a younger centre mid from somewhere.

Ball or Humphreys on 08:48 - May 10 with 1868 views | Nutkins_Return | Don't really see them as big direct competitors to be honest. Ball is your controlled and experienced man in the middle. A bit of a 'harder' Cole Skuse. He'll always have fans not getting him for the same reasons. A really solid pro for the champ (QPR could really have done with him ironically). Humphreys is more your ball playing, thread a ball through the lines type player albeit he is also quite tenacious. He will struggle as he has back end of this season for a slot but has the ability. McKenna will want a look in pte-season but suspect he'll go out on loan to a league one club. Luongo/Ball/Evans are competing Morsy/Camara (or also Evans/Luongo can do a job in the morsy role). *Edit - and I think we'll sign someone up like Taylor or better. [Post edited 10 May 2023 8:52]

Think Ball coming in against Fleetwood had echoes of Harness coming in against Port Vale. A bit of a smaller, tighter pitch than Portman Road against a well organised team. In neither game did the player shine but was it the circumstances that drove that or the players peformance (or possibly a bit of both).

Like you said, it's hard or a bit unfair to judge Ball with limited game time. However, it was noticeable that we gave away the ball (sorry, no pun intended!) in midfield far more often than we had done in any other game for the past few months. There was a particular spell in the first half where the ball seemed to rebound between us and Fleetwood for what seemed like ages - very "kick and rush". Consequently, we didn't control the possession anything like we do with Morsy & Luongo in the middle. I know there were other circumstances that affected the performance and it's also unfair to single out one player, but I was looking forward to seeing what impact Ball would have in a no-pressure game and, like you, I was left feeling disappointed.

I think we’ll see a lot of him next season, just my gut feeling.

Ball or Humphreys on 17:01 - May 10 with 1450 views | Swansea_Blue | Can I go for neither? I’d prefer a new signing at Morsy’s level, which should be achievable now we’re up. The Humph out on loan for 6 months, Ball a useful rotation player (bit harsh on Ball maybe, and I’d bevinterested to see what he can do with a bit of a run in the side).
