Reading are in a world of trouble 07:32 - Jun 28 with 4864 views | GeoffSentence | HMRC have issued a winding up order. EFL have added 'failing to pay taxes' to their list of misdemeanours. I wonder if they will go the way of Bury.

Reading are in a world of trouble on 08:18 - Jun 28 with 3859 views | RegencyBlue | It will be the last possible moment that they pay HMRC, it’s just a game businesses play all the time. They only appointed a new manager a couple of days ago so I don’t think that would have happened if they were about to go under. Can see further points deductions happening if they carry on like this though.

If they were wound up and a phoenix club arose, would the phoenix club get the trophy for the points record and their fans get to sing 'we got the record one hundred and six'

Think you’re being a touch unfair. They are a club that was formed in 1871 and have a long and proud history. Ok, they might well have spent a lot of that time in the lower leagues but that doesn’t mean that they can be called tinpot. That, simply smacks of snobbery. If fans of big clubs called Ipswich tinpot for being small in comparison to them, then we’d rightly get upset. Also worth noting that tinpot Reading have been much more successful than us (final league positions) for the best part of twenty years. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

..... but they do hold the record for the number of points gained in a professional league season with 106 points in the 2005—06 Football League .

Reading isn't a very well supported or lucrative club. I wouldn't be so sure.

Fair play to them, they have a long and proud history of winning f**k all and inventing achievements. So, I should be holding them up as Norwich's role models, really.

Calling a club tinpot in the way you did was just disrespectful- I’m sure to many clubs, Ipswich is tinpot in comparison. It’s like calling a club ‘proper’, it’s just ridiculous.

I went to Elm Park in the 80's to see us win. Got talking some Reading fans in the pub. Some may still go today. It's not their fault they have a soulless stadium and the club are on their knees. I feel sorry for those fans . Never want to see a club in trouble because ultimately it's the fans who go week in week out who suffer. Obviously if Town were ever in that position you wouldn't feel it as much as some of us.

They have finished higher than us for the best part of a decade. And have been around for as long as us. Think of the fans they are the ones who suffer. I don't like to see anyone go to the wall. It was a sad day when Bury did. I wouldn't even want them up the road to either.

More likely VAT and PAYE than Corporation Tax

Yes good point, likely PAYE. Certainly sounds like they're in a sticky spot. Do they have anyone we could pinch on the cheap?

I think Reading are in the same spot we were when we went down. Players who probably can't perform much more than mid table L1. No one really jumps out at all

That's a shame they don't have a Flynn Downes hiding somewhere. I just looked at their squad list. Not sure how up to date their site is but looks like they only have 10 outfield players. It's a good time to be a Derby, Peterborough, Bolton or Barnsley. Got Plymouth, Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday out of L1 and inherited basket cases in Reading and Wigan. MK Dons and Oxford dropped away after being decent for a bit too. Think that league is looking as weak as it has in years. Might even be an opportunity for someone like Pompey or Charlton to have a chance. [Post edited 28 Jun 2023 10:54]

I went to a game at Elm Park in the 80s too - we won 4-1. It was all mismatched stands and crumbling terraces. Agreed, I feel sorry for the genuine supporters too.
