That’s Keoghs replacement for this season sorted then.

Not sure we have room in the squad for an elderly cheerleader.

I think it would be a very good, shrewd signing. We have less than 50 Championship appearances across our first choice back four. Woolfenden has played once at that level. I know people want 'sexy' signings with potential resale value but you need a few experienced heads in there and we don't have that at the back right now. It's an area we look a bit green in.

Cathcart has 150+ games in the Premier League, 150+ games in the Championship and 72 Northern Ireland caps under his belt.

Would think this is his agent trying to get someone other than Reading bidding for his services.

As long as he has the legs for it. Keogh had played a similar number of Championship games in the season before he joined us but looked completely off the pace. If the recruitment team/staff think he'll be fine in that respect then I agree on the experience point.

Poll: How many points do you think you'll need to get a ticket for Norwich?

Not so sure. Adam Leventhal also reporting it, who is well in at Watford. It's the type of signing I could see us making. Although you could be right of course.

Seems a bit too much of a stretch that it's us or Reading. The fact he's Northern Irish and knows KmcK seems to make it a lazy link to me.

I've got no idea who we are signing, I can't place our ambitions or market right now but it seems to me anyone we bring in will be big £ in fees/wages.

Not quashed it, think it could be one of interest but sounds like nothing happening at present.

Think it says 'one of a number of clubs'.

I think there is going to be more change than people think. Two CBs (one experienced and one younger) with Edmundson going really wouldn't surprise me. I think it's very unlikely we don't bring in someone with a decent chunk of games at this level under their belt personally.

I can see this.

Vastly experienced, over 150 Premier League games, over 150 Championship games, over 70 international appearances for Northern Ireland.

Think would be smart signing actually.

What does everybody keep banging on about championship appearances for?

Most of our players haven’t had the chance to have some yet. Doesn’t mean they’re not good enough.

Chambers played 159,749 times in the championship but he wasn’t very good.

Chambers and Keogh have zero premier league appearances combined.

Cathcart has over 180. Personally I think that that level of experience is invaluable given that our defence is relatively inexperienced.

Also, the fact that he played pretty much a whole premier league season ending just over a year ago (admittedly in a poor side) shows his quality.

The Championship appearances were only part of the story.

Unless his legs or fitness are going, I would think he's about as decent a defender as we're going to be realistically aiming for. We may have been able to recruit championship level players in league one, but realistically we're not going to be able to recruit premier league players in the champ. Not when they can earn quadruple the money for bench warming.

He'll be 34 for the majority of the coming season. He's played at least 25 league games in each of the last 5 seasons, 3 of which seasons were in the Premier League. He's in the Northern Ireland squad for the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign and last played 90 minutes in a Euro 2024 qualifier a fortnight ago.

So in my book he's neither excessively elderly nor to any extent a cheerleader.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Not that it means much, but he's quite possibly an old pal of Rene Gilmartin, as they joined Watford at the same time and were there three years together.

I don't keep banging on about it.

McKenna wanted an experienced CB in and around the squad last season and I don't see it being any different a level higher. That doesn't mean I don't think our players could be good enough (and I am sure Woolfenden will be more than good enough).
