What a job though, taking on a mid table Saudi team. |
I get the moral issue, but we don't condemn oil workers, doctors, nurses or building contractors who work in Saudi for a lot more money than they would receive working in this country.
We seem to single out footballers on every issue. Last week it was obscene wages, whilst we are quite happy to pay to watch the Rolling Stones or whoever earning fortunes for their concerts and living outside the UK to avoid income tax. [Post edited 3 Jul 2023 13:52]

Criticism of sportspeople, governing bodies, clubs etc. being seduced by Saudi money always feels slightly weird considering our own government chooses them (and Apartheid Israel) as its two big Middle Eastern strategic partners.
And it’s not just us turning a blind eye to the human rights abuses, misogyny and anti-LGBT stuff for money. We have British hardware and British trainers helping the Saudis bomb Yemeni children.
Even if you’d hope more and more individuals should be taking a principled stand against the Saudis, Gerrard managing a football team is small potatoes compared to that bigger picture. |  |

Really? The Middle East has seen a power struggle and proxy wars play out between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Even if we think the choice our government is making is wrong, and that's a perfectly legitimate opinion to have, it is still a real politik choice to make.
Whereas footballers aren't in that bind. They aren't looking at their decision going if I manage in Saudi Arabia that will contain Iran. Or if I manage if Iran that will contain Saudi Arabia. Or if I manage in neither, I'm happy with the fallout. Their choice is strictly based on lining their pockets. |  |

The 2015 elections included 18 Arab members of Knesset. The Israeli football team has Palestinian arabs.
