Over the years...the US, Japan, Germany and US have used money to attract players to their respective leagues.

I'm no fan of Saudi money either but very little money in football is entirely clean.

Their criteria appears to be 1) big names who will raise the profile or b) non big name Muslim players who will be very good at that level.

I dislike what a curveball this is but we might see an unexpected positive if ashton can extract a big transfer fee.

For Henderson it’s a chance to experience a different culture and earn an absolute fortune in doing so. Yes he’ll already have plenty but unlikely to turn down double that and not go and do your mate a favour are you. He’s achieved everything he’s going to achieve here.

You can add China to that list - brutalisation of Uyghurs, belligerence towards Taiwan, and daily cyber attacks on the West etc etc. Also Russia when big names were signing for Anzhi Makhachkala. Unfortunately money talks.

On the plus side you lose a few mercenaries, and you won’t have to listen to Steven Gerrard on MOTD every week.

Tbh it will never establish as a league and very few people will watch it no matter who goes ans plays there. It’s the tradition and history of football clubs that make England, Spain and Germany special. The clubs in England for example will be followed for life by generations. No amount of money will make anyone watch this league. The Saudis have money and they want their piece of the game fine, but it won’t ever be popular in my lifetime.

They're making some odd signings IMO. I understand the likes of Ronaldo and Benzema, they're raising the profile and selling shirts etc. They're marketing vehicles who can play football at a high standard. Same as Gerrard in the managerial role to a degree. You would think these clubs also want to be the best in the league though, get some degree of first mover advantage and win things. Maybe this will continue to come, but my understanding is the standard is still pretty poor beyond the household names.

You would think the sensible buys would be players like El Mizouni and Camara, could've probably got them out there for a few hundred grand and £10k a week, and at good ages. Muslim too. Signings of that ilk. The Bradley Wright-Phillips to the MLS types.

Didn’t want to start another Saudi thread… but I’ve done some googling and can’t find anything definitive.

Where are the players based?

I know when China was splashing the cash all the clubs were based in Shanghai and that’s where the players lived, and just flew in to the various cities for games. Similar with some of the Russian clubs - when Samuel E’to’o was at FC Anzhi they all lived and trained in Moscow and flew in and out on the same day to their home stadium. Is it a similar set up here?

The model appears odd.

It's not just the headline making signings, they're also raiding mid tier Europe for their lower leagues too. Saw an article in German the other day, saying how the average 3rd tier player there earns about 50k (Euros) pa, but by going to Saudi 2nd tier can look to ear 3x that, plus accommodation and daft Cara thrown in too.

Saudis are clearly trying to steal the thunder from the PL. The game is dead to the working man. If we get promoted to the PL ridiculous match day ticket prices await. Gravy train for players but it’s amoral.
