Really interesting comment from Chambers on Woolfenden 08:57 - Aug 4 with 3842 views | Asa | Chambers said that he plays to his level. In League One he looks a League One player. If he played in the Premier League, he'd look a Premier League player. Had never really thought about it but found myself agreeing that, without any evidence of how he'd perform at the level above (aside from a handful of Championship games), that is exactly how I feel about him. I'd argue that he looked well above a League One player last season, but whenever Woolfenden has been in a team of average players, he's not stood out like you can sometimes do, but looked average. In a team of exceptional players, he's looked exceptional himself. Can really see him pushing on this season and looking every inch the part again and what Chambers has said suggests he's expecting that.
Really interesting comment from Chambers on Woolfenden on 09:11 - Aug 4 with 3111 views | NthQldITFC | Not really sure what more he could have done in League One last season to look better than a League One player. From what I saw he utterly dominated virtually every forward he came up against by his positional sense, timing and skill on the ball. But I kind of see where he's coming from - Woolfy very much has the attributes to play Premier League I think, and I also think he will do so with his boyhood club.

He's been really good for about 18 months now but i really thought he struggled with the basics of defending prior to that. Maybe he's just gone up a level or 2 with understanding, experience and confidence of consistently playing in a cohesive team.

Yep, pure class. And he saved a lot of his best performances for the best opposition as well, I think Clarke-Harris is still in his pocket.

Really interesting comment from Chambers on Woolfenden on 10:00 - Aug 4 with 2547 views | Westcountryblue | I think Woolfenden certainly has the tools to go to that next level. He's 24 now, so this will be a big season for him and the club in terms of achieving his potential, both on the pitch and in terms of his market value. With Woolfie, i've always thought he'd benefit playing alongside a vocal and commanding centre back, as by his own admission he can be relatively laid back. Not sure Burgess and Edmondson fit the bill, hence why the club is looking.

There was a time when he played alongside McGuiness which I don't think benefited either player as they each needed experience alongside them at that stage in their careers. But he's always looked a good player to me, and I think a lot of the criticism that came his way (which is much less so now) was not really justified. And I don't think one should confuse reliance on good timing and positional sense with being laid back, not least because he is deceptively quick. [Post edited 4 Aug 2023 10:05]

I just get a bit annoyed at the adjectival revisionism about the team last year. This is not to take away from an excellent achievement, but Jim Magilton was an exceptional player, Jamie Clapham was an exceptional player.

We got 98 points. It was an exceptional team full of exceptional players. It's not revisionism. It's context. Do you really think I am intending to suggest that Freddie Ladapo is as good as Darren Bent was for us. Or that Bent was as good for us as Alan Brazil. Magilton and Clapham weren't even exceptional by the standards of the players we had in the 70's. We were an exceptional League One team. +66 is the highest goal difference ever at that level I think. We had an exceptional defence that kept 8 clean sheets in a row and finished with the lowest goals conceded. We scored 101 goals, the third most ever. An exceptional attack. Our points was a record for 2nd place I think too. So we were actually, in many categories, an exception to pretty much every third tier side of the past! I'm not comparing Woolfenden to Baresi, but then I am sure you knew that :) [Post edited 4 Aug 2023 10:12]
