And because we spend millions of pounds on recruitment campaigns to attract many of these people here because either (a) we need their skills or (b) we want their money (foreign students). |  |

Here's why...
It's a safe country
It's a welcoming country (despite the efforts of some)
There's less low level corruption
There's abundant employment opportunities at various levels
My wife is Colombian and runs a community project largely supporting people from a Latin American background and the above comes from the answers I'm given when I ask that very question.
Safe - compared to Honduras and El Salvador which both appear to have massive gang problems
Welcoming - at least from Latin American community already here
Low level corruption - see Safe; you don't have to pay the Police here for protection
Abundant Employment - many will work 2/3 gig jobs, share housing, have a social life and send money home
Oh and it's been Visa free for something like 18 months, come in as a tourist, then stay... Not quite within spirit of the law |  |

Around about thirty-five years ago the DSS (now DWP) was looking at the challenge posed by the so-called Baby Boomers reaching pension age from about 2010 onwards. Their calculations at the time were that the workforce would need to increase from its then current level by at least five million. One of the things they were then looking was the cultural and religious barriers in the Asian community to women working. Other things looked at included reshaping the entire pension landscape to reduce the burden on the public purse, which of course has happened.

It remains high because the party in power has no interest in lowering it.
High immigration is good for them, because they are the party that argue they are needed to deal with it and drive it down. "Stop the boats!" they cry. If they did, they wouldn't be able to win votes by crying it.

We have a guy from Brasil in our team at work and he was saying this morning that one of the things he finds very attractive is in the UK, everybody can be themselves. There is no societal pressure to 'become a... (fill in your own high flying occupation)' for status as he finds at home.
Obviously many have aspirations but I thought it an interesting insight. |  |
