EADT silence making me twitchy 23:34 - May 27 with 18075 views | Samuelowen88 | Got faith in Phil, but still slightly twitchy that the EADT boys haven't out anything out yet. Please take no offense Phil, but would their level of confidence in a story have to be higher than your own you think? Although your implication was sources in the club? So would assume they hear the same things.

Worth pointing out, if you want something to back that up, through the same sources I've reported that Maresca was Chelsea's top target, then that Chelsea had moved on from KMc.

Therefore, there is nothing to report! Sky TV, newspapers, websites, need something to fill the relative empty time of off-season, and we’ve been the victim of that this week.

Do you really believe that nothing has been going on? Because it certainly has. KMc wouldn't be about to sign a new contract if the interest, the discussions with representatives and US directors flying over for talks weren't very real. Brighton even thought they'd got him.

What is laughable is that Kieran was even seriously contemplating jumping ship to Brighton! Or was his agent just using them to secure a better deal here at Ipswich? So is it down to “ the project”, or good old fashioned money?

Why is it laughable that he’d seriously consider taking a job at a club who have been in the PL for 5 years with a very decent squad and lots of financial headroom because of the players sold and the prices obtained for them?

I don't get why Brighton aren't seen as a step forward from a manager's perspective. Established in the Premier League and a squad to match that, great ownership, best analytics set-up there is from what I've been told. It's a great step if you're looking to then move to a bigger club. Town have done very well to persuade him to stay here.

Theyve sold their best players, and arguably peaked. Limited opportunity to do better than the 6th thay they achieved a year ago. Higher expectation levels. Probably more downside risk than Ipswich. Potential reputational damage, I think most of the footballing community would be surprised had he jumped ship for Brighton.

Indeed, Brighton are one of the most progressive clubs in the UK and have really done nearly everything right since being promoted. Yes, some of their fans don't like seeing the revolving door of talent, but that is pretty much the way you have to do it now. If we manager to cement ourselves in the premier league over the next 4 or 5 seasons, then maybe we can start taking a position of prestige over Brighton.

I think they would have been surprised that he jumped ship for a mid table club without giving us one more year. I didn't think he would join them, and I'm pleased he didn't. I hope he's not damaged his relationship with the players.

It amazes me that people can't see the gap between the two clubs presently. We've just been promoted with probably a mod table Championship squad at best. Our best player has now returned to Chelsea and doesn't appear likely to return. Next season is a massive ask for KM to keep us out of the bottom 3 and will almost certainly be his biggest achievement if he was to succeed. We will be backed by the owners, we can be certain of that and my only real hope is that 1 or 2 may get points deductions and that there maybe another one we can finish above.

People see / acknowledge the gap, but some of us also see the downside risk of moving to Brighton. Looks like KM agrees in the end.

It's crazy isn't it? When the news first broke about De Zerbi leaving the general reaction, certainly mine, was "uh oh!". It seemed the perfect fit and was no surprise KM was the immediate favourite. Much as I hated their tactics I guess it shows how well his agent has done raising his profile in the last week (has it really only been that long?!). Now he's seen as a genuine contender for the top jobs and Brighton isn't seen as a worthwhile move any more.

There were really not that many people saying that. Most were saying he should stay put, even the Brighton fans were saying so.

Maybe we do acknowledge there is a gap but we are not stupid enough to keep talking about it. Either way there are compelling reasons to stay so i do believe you can spin it either eay depending if you are a Ipswich or a Brighton fanboy I have to say it really p*sses me off our journos keep banging on about Brighton being this Amazing gig. Seriously need to give their heads a wobble, if you like Brighton that much go and report for them instead [Post edited 28 May 2024 5:53]

IMHO, football fans in general attach way too much importance to the now - how things are currently. Brighton are currently an "established" Prem team. Doesn't mean they will remain so. History is important - by looking back it gives a better indication of what can be achieved than trying to predict based on the current picture. Couple that with the ambition, vision, and funding of ORG, and I think our future looks bigger and better than Brighton's. Big year for us this one, if we can survive and maybe get above 15th, that provides a great platform to establish ourselves again. New stand, new academy, maybe we keep KM for a bit longer after this season, or attract another top manager if he goes. In 3 years time, we will be finishing above Brighton.

They would have been a bit of a step forward, but the question is whether it would have been enough of a step forward to make all the upheaval worthwhile. McKenna didn't appear to think so, and I can see why. Established in the Premier League? Well, yes, but is any club outside the big 6 ever truly established? They've slipped from 6th to 11th this season - like most clubs, they're two bad transfer windows away from a relegation scrap. Look at Charlton in the 2000s. Look at Leicester a year ago. And countless other examples. Their squad is undoubtedly stronger than ours, but not as strong as it was a year ago, most of their best players from that season left. Great ownership, are we sure about that one? Bloom has done a remarkable job, and De Zerbi may well be a hothead, but something clearly went wrong there and recruitment seems to have been a factor. McKenna may well have had cause to be wary there, especially when set against the backing he currently enjoys and Ashton's seemingly limitless ambition, at least rhetorically. Best analytics set up? Great, but there's no reason we can't do something similar. I'm always very wary of the 'stepping stone' argument, it rarely seems to work out in football (or life in general). You can overthink these things. Better to work out where you want to go (probably Manchester United in McKenna's case) and work your hardest to get there. Obviously if he was currently manager of Yeovil he'd need a stepping stone or two, but I think Brighton is a relatively small step and not worth the risk for him. Luckily, he seems to agree!

Whilst we'd have all been really disappointed and annoyed with him if he had chosen to go to Brighton, you cannot underestimate the size of the decision he has just made and the pulling power of our owners. We shouldn't really have any right to fend off Brighton. Sounds like he's turned down Palace and Brighton now in the space of 4 months. Teams that finished 10th and 11th in the PL this season. Think it is pretty reasonable to say that if he keeps us up this year, we are only in danger of losing him to one of the 'big 8'. Through his own success and the power of the project/owners, we've narrowed down the pool of clubs that are an upgrade on us considerably.
