Until they realise (too late) that the power he will have will be used against them. [Post edited 1 Jul 2024 21:41]

The UK might be about to have a relative renaissance period, where it is one of the saner countries, what with France, Germany and the Seppos all going a bit doolally. I suspect we're heading the same way. The election will be a rejection of 14 years of Tory rule, not a vote of confidence in Labour. They'll inherit a sh*tshow and fail to deliver. The right will roll out all the standard scare-mongering about the left and the country will flock to Farage. Or maybe something nice will happen...

....centre-right government, rather than a far-right government. For a while anyway.

Trump’s Supreme court delivers for him again on 09:40 - Jul 2 with 1792 views | Oldsmoker | Actually, the ruling was for the President. Biden is the president. I suggest Biden orders Seal Team 6 to assassinate Trump now as he can't be prosecuted as per Supreme Court ruling. Trump will say the 34 felony counts that he was found guilty of should be dismissed as he wrote the cheque when he was in office. All the crimes were committed when he was a candidate but any evidence from his time in office can't be used so it puts the case in jeopardy.

Trump’s Supreme court delivers for him again on 10:05 - Jul 2 with 1720 views | NorthLondonBlue2 | It’s not great news, but it’s not as bleak as you suggest, in my view at least. I actually think that if a president could be prosecuted for fulfilling the duties of president, that would be a recipe for disaster. It’s for Trump to say why paying off a porn star to keep quiet about their ‘liaisons’ was in fact protected and official presidential business. Of course he can’t do that. But, what it unfortunately does do is open challenges to eg the safety of his conviction as some of the evidence obtained may now not be admissible. And if that challenge succeeds, his conviction could be quashed. I’m not well versed enough in US criminal law to know whether he could have a retrial or would be protected. So he may succeed in kicking this one into the long grass but the path remains open for his other activities to be prosecuted, albeit in attenuated form.

I find the idea you can go to the Supreme Court and seek a ruling in your favour, prior to being found guilty, alien.

It’s not alien, far from it - the extent of criminal liability of heads of state (which a US President is) was considered in depth in the UK in the case of former dictator Pinochet. I’ll need to read the latest SC judgment in detail but, I think it’s healthy that a president doesn’t have to second-guess an unpopular but legitimate decision, and will know that any actions which could not be considered to be legitimately within the remit of a head of state would be liable to prosecution. And, fwiw, I don’t believe paying hush money to a sex worker to keep quiet prior to an election falls remotely within his official duties.

It is the indictment for attempting to overthrow an election that he is trying to avoid. The ruling was , I suspect, just what Trump wanted. Refer case back to lower court and almost certainly doesn’t get heard until after election. He then orders the charges to be dropped.

Yea, I wonder if anyone currently in power is thinking this through, and if there are any unindented consequences.

I don't think it will be his first act. He will wait until he has a bit of a slump in approval, and then throw it as red meat to the MAGA base. Who will he anoint as his successor? Don Jr for VP, anyone?
