Well I'm happy with our start 10:37 - Sep 23 with 4912 viewsAsa

Seen so much flouncing after Saturday, especially on social media. On levels that are spectacular for us. As if any away game in the Premier League is a gimme.

We were off it and not our usual selves and still came away with a point from a team that was pretty much our equal last season after the first 5-6 games of the season.

Man City and Brighton away. Liverpool at home. Even Fulham, who we deserved to beat and who were a 95th minute West Ham equalizer away from being 6th in the table. They've just beaten Newcastle comfortably.

We have as many points as the bottom three combined, aren't in the relegation zone and have scored in three matches, kept out a very good Brighton side already come back from the death to take points when below par. Whilst bedding in half a new side.

Very satisfied with the start. Another tough one Sunday. Did say it could be 10-12 games in before we start picking up proper points and in the meantime it's about not losing, picking up a point here and there and winning the winnable home games and taking what we can away.

We could have beaten Fulham, could even have nicked it at Brighton, probably win on Saturday if we weren't well off it.

Yet only Liverpool and Man City have been able to beat us.

I agree with 'satisfied' that's where I am - 'very happy' is a bit strong though.

So long as we are sat above that relly-line - that'll do.

As Joe said on the Blue Monday pod, we're at about par at the moment. Which is pretty good considering we're still in the gelling stage.

Indeed. Maybe happy rather than very happy is more appropriate.

But I'd have taken being outside the drop zone after those 5 games with a new team being bedded in.

We've been competitive for 60-70 minutes against Liverpool, 75 minutes against City, held Brighton, should have beaten Fulham - that's four teams right up there, and the one game you'd hope we could win but not expect to, we played poorly in and still took something and, as importantly, stopped them winning.

I fully expected nothing from City, Brighton and Liverpool.

From Fulham and Southampton I'd have hoped for 4 points, wouldn't have been surprised with 2.

So 3 in total from 5 matches is about par as you say.

Sounds about right to me, Flash.

With regard to the OP, I had a beer with my geordie mate yesterday who was at the Fulham game. He reckoned they gave his lot a right going over. Not seen the reports or the highlights, but assuming he’s right about it and given we competed with Flum, that tells me that beyond the usual six or seven suspects there’s points to be had in this league.

I’m happy with the start too. My fear was that we’d be miles off everybody in the manner Sheffield Utd were last season and the mob up the road on their last and hopefully final visits to the PL.

The problem will come once Everton, Wolves and Palace start winning a few games. Everton throwing away leads isn't going to continue. Once that happens I expect to see a bit of a gap develop between the bottom teams and the other lower half teams

We should get better too, though. Just need to make sure three teams are always worse!

I'm not sure there has been that much flouncing. I think it is important that regardless of what league we are in, fans are allowed to point out areas that need work and it not be flouncing.

All in all we are doing solid. Certainly competing. Don't look out of our depth, lots of things to improve on mainly due to having a new squad but I'm sure we will continue to get better.

I said at the start of the season if we finished 4th from bottom that would be a good result this season.

It absolutely would be.

It would be a pretty incredible achievement actually. I know we have spent cash, but we went back to back. Our squad value will still be lowest, wage budget as well. Finishing 17th would be superb.

I’m confident we’ll do it, we’ve not looked out of place even against Liverpool. Haaland just destroys everyone, even teams like West Ham with £50m players - I don’t think we can read anything into that game (and it was still far from an embarrassing scoreline).

KM has been pleasingly pragmatic to our approach, favouring a solid defence and attacking on the break. As the new players are bedded in will find more fluency and cutting edge. I do think a switch of Szmodics to the centre (behind Delap), Omari on the right, and Clarke on the left will be how we end up.

Hopefully we’ll have Phillips back ASAP, he looked class against Fulham and a settled partnership with Morsy could be pretty formidable.

I feel once we get that first win .we will be on a different level then ..as 3 points can move a Club at Least two places higher if not more depending on other results ..and when players see their position then ..the motivation can only get higher to get another win the belief is there ..we all know, players manager.owners . Fans that All that's required from the club this first season is jst pure survival..nothing more..not like previous seasons. It was promotion and top two was to be the aim ..,
We are now where we want to be and securing that is the aim ..a bonus would be in the top 10 or 12and that would be a real statement...Still 33 games to go ...one game at a time..imagine if we stayed up only to see .Everton. go down..with their fancy néw stadium .and entertaining maybe Wrexham next season. Lol .and we in premier. As Kevin keegan would say
..ID LOVE IT .I WOULD JUST LOVE IT !!!

Not a dig at the OP but we have a number of fans who get very precious at ANY criticism of the team. Didn’t see any real flouncing on here on Saturday just frustration that we had a poor second half against a relegation rival.

We all know 17th is the prize. I think we’ll just about get there.

Everton could just as easily go the other way and stop getting themselves into winning positions. I have high hopes that they'll be poor this season. I was very surprised at how bad west ham were against chelsea. Not that i'd expect them to go down but i don't think we should fear them.

I think we have had a lot of years of negativity, and this season is going to be very very tough, and we will need a lot of patience. It would be easy for supporters to fall into old habits and start singling out players. That does not help us, so I think we have a new programatic, realistic, constructive view in general, and we are going to need to continue that through good times and bad.

We have a lot of inexperienced premier league players, it is their first season and we need to cut them some slack if they are under par. If they continue to perform under par, they will simply lose their place and the Manager will deal with it.

The players WANT to play for us and the manager, we have waited years for a squad of players to be like this, and so yes I think it is right that people are sensitive to the players receiving criticism. We need to protect them, give them a safe environment where they can grow as players and take risks whilst playing without worrying about getting slated if they have a bad game. It's important to our overall success imo.

Also, people need to realise that it is real time reactions and emotions and people will say things in the heat of the moment because that is human nature and the beast of football supporting.

To nearly quote a famous film, what is posted between 3-5 (within reason) , should stay between 3-5. I don't like that whole thread bumping and this aged well stuff.

I don't see that as a given at all - not to the extent that they pull away from us anyway. Wolves have only won 1 of their last 15 PL games.

Disagree. As I posted on Saturday, shouting stuff at the pitch/TV is the heat of the moment. I don't feel the need to go on TWTD, click "add post", type it in and then hit send. It's not quite "heat of the moment" by the time you get to that point. Maybe that's the difference between some of us old 'uns and the newer generation. I was dancing round my flat after the equaliser, but nobody saw it, I didn't feel the need to film it and share it on social media, and that's perhaps the way it should be if you've ever seen my excited dancing.

People are entitled to get annoyed at misplaced passes in the heat of the moment - they don't have to come on here and tell everyone about it. And if they do, not everyone will agree with them.

Also, if you feel like posting a hot take about a player or the position of the game and then the opposite happens, the grief and "this aged well" stuff you get back is entirely justified IMO!

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I wouldn't say a football messageboard is necessarily for that. It's for football chat generally. As I say, it's not quite 'in the moment' when you come to posting something, as opposed to what spills out of your mouth whilst watching. But fine. I'm not saying don't do that, just that you should expect some comeback if you make a tit of yourself.

Of course it’s in the moment if you react to something that’s just happened in the game and 30 seconds later post on here or socials about it. You’ve been around this board a long time, surprised and amazed you don’t consider a football message board the place to react to a football game!

I'm the same. Satisfied with our start. Convinced we will get better with every game, regardless of results. Give it a few more games and a late winner, then we will be up and running. If we are out of the bottom 3 in 10 games time, then I will believe we are good enough to survive this season.
