I've always found the whole 'Newcastle sacked Robson' thing a bit silly. Afterall, we sacked Burley but would all feel well within our rights to chant his name

Its the way they claim him having treated him poorly. He wasonly there 4 or 5 years afterall. Hardly a club legend for them.

They’d finished 5th in the PL the previous season, 3rd the season before. He was turfed out like a rubbish sack on bin day. He’d lasted four games into the new season.
ITFC were 19th in the Championship ten games in. They’d been relegated thanks to some dreadful signings. Were supporters on George’s back? Not where I was sitting. Did I think maybe it was time for him to move on? Tbh we thought yes. But I was split on it.
So in a sense you are right but in other ways not. The reality is Newcastle FC and the supporters changed the narrative when he died. They all wanted shot of the old codger and all of a sudden he was revered, laughable statue and all. Part of that is post Robson they went down the pan showing just how good he’d been.
GB had a few years left in his career and has always been welcome at PR and always will be. I’d like to have seen him made club President or something. He was a great player and a very good manager for us and I think ITFC fans have always had a realistic perspective of GBs time with us - unlike Newcastle and Bobby Robson.

Fine, what about Magilton? That wasn't a particularly pleasant end to a managerial career yet we'd happily chant his name

That was not the players or supporters. That was the Owner. Evans treated him dreadfully and I doubt a single ITFC supporter liked what happened at the time or since. No wonder Jim wanted nothing to do with the club while the dementor owned it.
If you are looking for supporter abuse - try McCarthy to whom some of the vitriol directed by a minority was awful.
This really isn’t about letting a manager go whether it’s a windbag who laughed all the way to the bank with a five year contract or Keane/Jewell/Hirst who didn’t know a team from a teapot. This is about Board, half the players and a lot of the supporters shovelling out a manager who’d finished top five PL for the previous few years then elevated him to god-like status just a few years later.
There’s a difference in my view.

The "we never sacked Bobby Robson" chant is pathetic. Completely classless. Not what The Great Man would have wanted, and I hope to never hear it again.

I think the Geordies deserve it.

They don't have to claim him. He is one of them ffs. It's not a competition. He will forever be one of us as well because of what he did for us. And his affection for us was huge! His greatest achievements were with us I think the whole country can celebrate and appreciate him too.

So I just imagined a Magilton Out banner?
Thinking we're somehow better than Newcastle because they sacked him is just silly. Football is notoriously a ruthless sport and fans are incredibly fickle. Let's be honest, football had changed beyond belief when Sir Bobby managed Newcastle from what it was when he was here. The two circumstances are hardly comparable
At the end of the day, they love him, we love him. Let's all remember the good times together

I don’t remember seeing a ‘Magilton out’ banner or him being abused or spat on (it happened to Robson by Newcastle supporters when he was managing England and binned Keegan). And I saw most of Jim’s home games as a ST holder. I do remember our last derby win and that he did ok with limited resources.

We’ll get an announcement over the PA asking the Newcastle fans who booed him and helped him get the sack to stand up. We’ll give them abuse for a few minutes, then they can sit down and it can go back to being a love in.

Fair enough. I was at the other end and not living in Suffolk and rarely read EADT. Reading the full article the banner person/people were turned on by other North Standers. Doesn’t quite equate to what we are talking about.
But before we condemn too many people or dress this into mass on the steps abuse of Magilton, Keegan style, what was the view of what happened by those who were actually there?
