The Ipswich left back just too far up the pitch
Which brings me back to the point i have made in previous posts.....play Leif Davis at left midfield and get Conner Townsend in at left back. .
The loyalty being shown to certain players is costing us points. I echo what someone else posted that Al Hamadi should have started the game up front today and Jack Taylor centre midfield.
Davis on left midfield and Hutchinson on right flank in a 4-5-1 first half .
No more playing out from the back against an opposing teams high press.
If we recruit some proven quality we just might survive this first season back in the Premiership.

You're missing the point.
It's not that Davis can't play left back, he's asked to play that way. Playing another LB and having him higher changes the whole dynamic of the team.
It's more complicated than you and unfortunately quite a few are making out.

Every neutral fan I have watched a game with has said the same about Davis.
Good enough going forward to play at the highest level, but as a defender has work to do before he will get anywhere near an international call-up. Our blue tinted glasses seem to negate the fact that despite the fact he creates countless chances, he is getting found out at this level defensively.
I think the answer is a lot of training and coaching, but in the meantime we need to go to three at the back as that will offer him protection whilst also allowing him to get forward.
Neither of our full backs are great positionally to be honest, Axel is by far the best one we have at the club in terms of defending, standing his ground and positioning. Maybe he doesn't offer a huge amount going forward but he's a vastly better defender than Clarke and Davis. | |

If we are to continue with davis high. Then make our midfield a 3 so we've always got one who can shuffle over. Or have a back 5 so when he's forward we can again shuffle over.
Going 4 2 3 1 when he's high leaves us exposed at this level imo.. but that's usually covered by a back running szmodics but we couldn't do thst today as he was playing the striker role. |  |

Full backs like Davis need space to run into offensively and he wouldn't get that playing further forward. See TAA at Liverpool. Maybe we need a better way of covering his high positioning or get him to drop a bit. As others have said it impacts the positioning and balance of the whole defence [Post edited 21 Dec 2024 23:54]

Axel struggled a bit last term when we were mostly on the front foot. But this season when we have been in wars defensively he has been immense. |  | | |

That's why you need three centre backs if you're going to stick with playing Davis this way at this level I feel. It will prevent him from being so exposed but still allow him to get forward as something of a wing back.
Davis has been magnificent for this club, but has limitations at this level in a back four defensively and at the moment he is getting exposed against the better oppositions who are carving open space.
I always wondered what it would look like if we played Axel as a right centre back in a three and could have Davis on one side and another attacking wing back on the right. | |

I agree with the original post. We need to move the ball faster and have more attacking pace .
Today we were bogged down, out fought and losing possession in our own half. Just could not get the ball forward. Little movement and no option to bypass the midfield. The sideways/backwards tippy tappy passing that was getting snuffed out by stronger challenges.
Newcastle gave us little time on the ball and marked our players alot more intensely. The space we give our opposition is ridiculous. . Yes, Al Hamadi should have started and let the team play to his strengths.
Maybe we try the same tactics too often and wr get found out . Could Leif Davis play left midfield ?

Al Hamadi simply isn't up to this level and should be loaned out in January and we need to bring another striker in. The drop off between our other two and Ali is huge. | |

And yes, we probably do need to recruit and strengthen this team. As sad as it is to say, some players are struggling.
If we want to stay in the Premiership we will have to contain the good teams . Everton, as poor as they are, still scratched out a bore draw at Arsenal. We did well to win at Spurs.

For goodness sake - how many times does it have to be said - Ali is still carrying his chronic injury, is only on the bench at all because of our lack of other options, and is only fit to play for around 20 mins max.

On 50mins it was clear for anyone with eyes that AAH shouldn’t start, or be in a PL squad. The ball passed into him, took 3 touches and nearly fell over to control it.
Absolute insanity people suggesting he should start
But even more insane that KM finds himself in this position, to not get in a striker is a huge failure on the recruitment team |  |

A couple of us said that our third summer window in a row not getting our main CF target was not good enough and would cost us. Lots of people shouted at us.

We are our own worst enemy. We should be keeping things tight in the opening minutes. Especially after conceding early goals against Man United, East Ham etc. Instead we have everyone other than Burges over the halfway line right from the kick off.
Keep a defensive shape against a far superior team.
I’m not saying that we would have beaten Newcastle. They were superb, we were toothless. But to concede after 26 seconds just gave us an impossible mountain to climb. |  |

Sorry, I thought you meant playing the same formation as now and Davis being told to bomb forward at whatever cost, I agree that if we change tactically it would allow him to get forward more without leaving us so exposed at the back.
I really think three centre backs is now the way to go, we have five players who can play there so we have the personnel. | |
