I have a lot of Arsenal friends and they're saying "you look worse than Luton last year". Its amazing what these fans think isn't it? I thought we did OK. Stayed in the game and opened up near the end. Not much else we can do.

The thing is, if you think of it as about how much we created (or didn't) that's fair enough. But if you think of it as we were only 1 goal away from a result throughout and Raya nearly presented that to us, we really aren't. They didn't look all that themselves.

Everton’s team on paper is a lot stronger than ours.

Don't get me started on why we wouldn't get the ball in the box during the last few minutes though. Very frustrating.

We were losing 1-0 and we over passed it sideways and backwards . A chance to put a ball in the box and it goes backwards. Get a couple of bodies in the box and put the ball in at every opportunity. It is not rocket science. Might score, might not...but better than the over playing to end up in the same position after 10-15 passes. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yeah can just see Al Hamadi knocking the Arsenal centre backs out of the way to plant a header in the top corner [Post edited 27 Dec 2024 23:31]

When we put the ball in the box twice in the last few minutes what happened? The keeper and centre halves dealt with it. Far too many seem to have listened to Shearer bleating repeatedly rather than the evidence of their own eyes from the past couple of years. [Post edited 27 Dec 2024 23:25]

Well, whip better balls into the box ? Move the ball quicker and give the opposition something to think about.

We should have been a lot braver towards the end. I think based on what they saw of Luton and us they make a fair point. I'm actually far more disappointed in today than I was at Newcastle, because the game was there in the last 15 minutes to put them under pressure and we refused to take the risk and settled for a 1-0 loss. We may have lost by 2 if we went for it but it really makes no difference. Really solid defensively with our shape. Nowhere near good enough in the other 2 thirds, and we did have opportunities, we just weren't brave enough to make that pass, cross or shoot from range.

And the manager to ensure they scrap it out That's the most disciplined I have ever seen us under McKenna really A change of system and personnel, the disappointment was the composure going forward which was a bit off tonight Delap and Hutch both having mares really

Been reflecting on this very point and have reached the conclusion that possibly it is because we are so well coached tactically and on patterns of play that during the game we can find it difficult to sometimes veer away from what we are have been drilled day in day out. In other words, making spontaneous in-match decisions when it is appropriate to do so. ie. just getting it in the box quickly or taking a pot shot from outside of the box. Anyone agree?

We were awful from the very first minute and they were clinical, you can just write a game like that off fairly quickly, as long as it's not part of a pattern. We did at least have a go, though. Today, we never risked anything when the opposition weren't great, and the game might have been there to take something from. Much more frustrating and disappointing. We also had a solid base tonight so if we did have a go, we shouldn't have been ripped apart on the counter.

It doesn't make it look silly at all when you take the time to understand it, but as with anything statistical it does require context. [Post edited 28 Dec 2024 0:41]

It does. Because that was a golden chance, the likes of which leads to a goal far more often than 0.16 times out of 1

Yes, and am encouraged by KM changing tactics to that extent, albeit it the end result of going more defensive was always likely to be less threat at the other end. People forget KM is having to learn as much as the players are. We may still get the balance right before it’s too late.
